"I'm much happier," she said. "The boss is nicer too, and doesn't come on to me all the time."

I laughed. "That's a bonus."

"It really is." She downed the last of her wine and stood. "I should probably get going, it's getting late."

"Me too," Ashley looked down at the cat on her lap. Karma didn't look like she was ready to move any time soon. "If she'll let me."

"Stubborn as a Rapid." I gently pushed Casper off my lap. He gave me a dirty look, but slinked away toward my bedroom. I'd pay for that later when I had no room to roll over.

I stood and shooed Karma off Ashley's lap. She gave me the same look as Casper and followed him. Yeah, I'd pay later all right.

"See, you're just the person to deal with stubborn creatures." Bec grinned and pulled out her phone to order a cab.

"I'll remember that when I need to update my resume." I walked with them the handful of steps to the door.

If this went badly, I might need to do that all too soon. Bam Clinton better get ready, because I wasn't going to let him ruin this for me. No way. Whatever it took, I'd lick him into shape. He wouldn't know what hit him. He might be stubborn, but so was I.

I closed the door behind my friends and got ready to wrestle some cats. After I cleaned all the fur off my clothes.

CHAPTER 5

BAM

I flopped down into the chair opposite Grace.

She had waved toward the one beside her, but this one was closer. That was all. I was in no way trying to make her life more difficult, or let her know I wouldn't be bossed around. Not at all.

Okay, maybe a little. However this went down, it would be with my full agreement or not at all.

I could have kicked my own ass a moment later when she frowned at me. Her eyes actually looked worried.

Worried!

Like I was going to bite her or something. She would be so lucky.

She cleared her throat.

"Do you need a lozenge?" I quipped.

She glared at me. "No. I need you to listen."

I crossed my arms over my chest. "Okay, I can listen." I pressed my lips together and nodded for her to speak.

She cleared her throat again, then gave me a challenging look.

I said nothing.

"I think Mr Thomas made it clear what he expects of us both," she said. "And what will happen if we don't deliver on that. Would you agree?"

I kept quiet.

She let out an exasperated breath in a rush. "You can talk now."

"Ohhh," I drew out the word and let the sarcasm drip. "Yeah, I get it. We gotta remind the world I'm a good guy, because one minor incident made them forget it."

She pursed her lips. "Something like that. You were out with the guys last night."

My whole body stiffened. "You stalking me?"
