She swallowed hard, her eyes filling with tears.

He cuddled her close. “Shoot, darlin’, I didn’t mean to make you cry.”

A sob escaped, and she gripped his back and hid her face against his neck, fighting for composure. “That’s my secret, too. I twisted myself into a pretzel to be anything and everything for my family to succeed and get ahead. It seemed that my dad only noticed me when I was successful. I was terrified of failure. But you taught me to be myself, loved me for me, and that gave me the courage to break away from that circular, destructive behavior. I’m so grateful for that, Sam.”

“I’m grateful for you, Mari. You taught me something, too.”

“What?”

“That vulnerability isn’t a weakness. The old Sam would have never been able to tell you about my fear of horses. That seemed so diminishing to me back then, but now, I see that getting in touch with my emotions keeps me more grounded and in the moment. It’s the living part.”

Cradling her head against him, Buck held her tight. His hand tangled in her hair as he cupped her head, bringing her mouth to his as he kissed her softly.

After several minutes, he shifted. “Are you getting restless again? And if you are, might you be looking for some action?”

He nodded. “Well, this cowboy wants to take you for a ride. How about that?”

She gave him a wry smile. “Hmm, let’s make you a real cowboy. I think I can beat those eight seconds,” she said, pushing open his robe, finding him hard and aroused.

He chuckled, then gasped as her mouth closed over him. She was going to give him the ride of his life, now, and forever as their hearts and souls had the courage to embrace the love they had for each other, a never-ending give-and-take stream.
