“Yeah. She cursed you so I wouldn’t be able to get your help while she hunted my pack.”

“You really did fucking step in it, didn’t you?” He chuckled. “Look, it was a crappy fucking attempt to curse my heart. I just figured she was one novice witch that I fucked and forgot to call back.”

“So, you’re good? You’re not going to fucking die on me?” I replied.

“It’s nice you fucking care,” Lane said. “But you can’t kill the immortal. Might’ve fucking hurt for a hot minute, but then I would’ve fucking ripped her apart.”

“You can’t,” I told him. “You wouldn’t have been able to. Your magic doesn’t work on hunters.”

“I’m aware now of what she is,” he retorted. “Why are you calling, wolf boy? I doubt you give a fuck about my goddamn heart.”

“I need your help.” He was right. I didn’t give two fucks about his heart. I was too fucking worried about my pack. “I need you here.”

“I can’t beat her magic, Killian. I can’t do what you’re thinking I can.”

“No, no…. I know you can’t. But even without your magic, you’re single-handedly the strongest person I know,” I stated. Yeah, maybe I was appealing to his fucking ego, but it was the truth. “I need your help to protect my family. I know you’ve got your own shit going on and I wouldn’t push the fucking matter if it wasn’t important. I need someone here in case…”

I couldn’t say the words.

“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” Lane said quietly and ended the call.

I exhaled slowly and glanced back at our house. Genevieve stood on the back porch, arms crossed as she watched me closely. How much had she overheard? Did she understand how much I fucking hated this? Would she hate me for doing it?

I hoped to hell she understood I had to do this for her. I had to do this for all of them.

Chapter 109

Genevieve

The mood at the pack house was devastating. Word about the Ingrams spread around town as a horrific accident. As a pack, we knew the truth. They were murdered.

The other truth was that any of us could’ve been next. That thought was horrifying and nauseating. It reflected hard on the Byrnes—something everyone noticed.

Declan was so lost in his thoughts that I doubted he knew he was rubbing that spot on his chest. Raven stuck with him, quietly talking him through it while Cade remained close to help.

Sam was visibly frustrated because we had nothing to offer in the way of an answer. What was going to happen? Had they figured out how to stop the hunter? How were we supposed to live like this?

Lucas had completely withdrawn from everyone. Haunted. I couldn’t imagine what he was feeling. Nolan went with him, becoming his shadow.

Finn delicately bounced between conversations to help give what answers they had. The boy was an odd ray of sunshine on a dark night. He left comfort wherever he went. How? I didn’t have a clue, but he eased minds just a little.

And then there was Killian. His whole demeanor was hard and concentrated. His mind reeled, but it was the possibility of with what that bothered me. That phone call in our backyard bothered me. It didn’t sit well that he was hiding who he’d been talking to. Neither did the way he was adamant I couldn’t come home with him. Or how he fought with Roan to make him leave. Or the fact that Cade had shown up on our doorstep with a weekend bag of clothes to stay with Killian.

My husband was on a mission, and I was painfully aware of just how little I knew of the new man he was. What he was capable of scared me. Not the potential of what he could do to the hunter—no that was necessary. What scared me was the potential he had to sacrifice himself in the process.

Everything made me emotional. I was worried, afraid, angry, and just… a mess. I curled up in a lawn chair alone. I should’ve kept up with the masses, but I didn’t have it in me. Instead, I texted my sister because that felt easier.

GABBY: Are you safe?

I just don’t know what to do.

GABBY: You stay at the pack house and out of the way, GiGi.

You sound like Killian. I can’t just leave him to deal with this alone.

GABBY: The hell you can’t.

You don’t see him, Gabby. I’m worried about what he might do…
