“I really, really suck at this. But going by what happened to you, I've learned that time really waits for no one. And I can't keep waiting for the right time because there's none. I'm the one who has to make the time right with my actions.”

Judging by the look on her face, she has no idea where I’m going with this. “Now you are scaring me, Love.”

“That's not my intention. I hope I won't scare you away with what I'm about to do.”

I'm going about this all wrong. I had planned to do this in a more romantic setting not on the bed after an evening of passion. But it feels right, and there's no going back now. I hold her by the arms and settle her on the bed. “Why don't you just lie down and close your eyes?”

She scrunches her eyebrows.

“Don't you trust me?” I ask.

“I do, but you are weird right now.”

“Just trust me.” She sighs and finally closes her eyes.

I keep my eyes on her as I reach for the bedside drawer and take out the ring box. I trace my fingers from her collarbone down to her breasts, teasing her nipples with my fingers.

She moans but keeps her eyes closed. “If you want to go for another round, all you need to do is ask.”

I place the ring on her sternum.

“What's that?” She opens her eyes and slightly looks down at herself. She blinks, looks at me before sitting up. The ring falls on her lap at her sudden movement.

I take the ring from her lap.

“I lost you once and that taught me the lesson that I don't ever want to lose you. I don't care if we have only been officially together for two months, or less or more. I just want to make you officially mine. I have only one question for you now.”

She's been silent all through, just staring at me with teary eyes.

“Marry me? Marry me and complete me. Marry me, and I will be yours completely, wholly, and officially. Just as you will be mine for the rest of our lives. Marry me, Gianna, and make me the happiest man on earth.”

The rest of my words are cut off by her launching herself on me, almost causing me to fall off the bed. She plants kisses all over my face.

“You haven't answered my question,” I manage to say between kisses.

She stops kissing my face and draws back to look at me, her face radiating with happiness. If I had any doubts about her rejecting my proposal, they are all gone now.

“Do I even have to say anything? What else would my answer be? Yes. Yes, yes, yes! I will marry you, Chris White.”

I happily slip the ring onto her finger. “You don't know how happy you've made me.”

“You’re home to me,” she says.

“Thank you for letting me love you.”

It’s power taken but also given, an exchange where I do as she wants and feel both powerful and incredibly vulnerable in return. Submitting and giving the whole of myself to the woman I love the most in the world.

Epilogue – Gianna

Seven years later

Standing by the doorway, I fondly watch my kids play together in the living room. Six-year-olds Bella and Damien, the identical twins, are the loudest in the room as they play a video game on the TV, occasionally pushing each other playfully.

Meanwhile, four-year-old Tasha is trying to entertain her one-year-old brother, Sam, by dancing weirdly, earning giggles from my baby.

None of them are aware that I'm home, too engrossed with their tasks to notice me.

Their father is nowhere in sight. I guess he needed a break. No matter how much we love our kids, they are a handful.
