Panic careened into my brain and exploded on impact as I reminded myself that I was looking at someone I was going to fuck.

A stranger.

A really hot stranger, but a stranger nonetheless.

I stumbled back and sank onto one of the empty chairs. This was too much to handle.

“Are you all right?” Muriel asked.

“Nope.”

“Should I call your emergency contact?”

“No.” The very last thing I needed right now was my mom showing up. I was an adult, but she didn’t view me that way, and probably wouldn’t even start until I moved out, which wouldn’t be happening until I graduated university. I’d already had to fight her tooth and nail to come myself, and I was not going to chicken out…again.

“Would you like me to contact Sidney, then? We could arrange a meeting in quite short order.”

I opened my mouth but nothing came out. How was I supposed to be in the same room as him? What if I fainted because of the scent? But I’d have to meet him, or someone else, eventually. Every doctor cautioned against going solo for a first heat and I’d become morbidly obsessed with reading about the horror stories of unplanned ones. I had every privilege available to me to be able to plan mine with a professional. That didn’t make it any less awkward, though.

Not trusting my mouth, I nodded.

Muriel beamed, picked up the phone, and dialed. “Hello, Sidney! I have a beautiful young omega here about to present. Would you happen to be free for a quick meeting? Excellent. We’ll see you shortly.”

“Wait! Right now?! I can’t meet him now.” I hadn’t picked my outfit with any care, hadn’t done my hair, or put on makeup. I hadn’t cuted myself up enough to meet someone that looked like him. “Can I come back later?”

“I’m sorry, dear, but you’re running out of time before your heat. It’s really better to do this as soon as possible.”

I wanted to curl up and let the ground swallow me whole, but it remained steadfastly solid.

“Come with me. I’ll get you comfortable in one of the meeting rooms.” Muriel got me a glass of water and a cup of some calming tea that smelled like a grandma. I sipped it anyway and scarfed down a packet of chocolate chip cookies while I waited.

Meeting a new client was always a bit nerve-racking, but meeting a client that was going to be having their first heat was doubly so. Most of the omegas I took care of were deeper into their cycles.

“Yeah, of course. I’ll be right in.” I hung up with Muriel and did a quick survey of my home.

I lived pretty close to the clinic, and I kept my place meticulously clean because I never quite knew when I would need to use it to host an omega. Tidying away a few dishes into the dishwasher, I deemed the space ready and hopped in my vehicle to head over to meet my new client.

Muriel was on her feet as I stepped through the door. “Oh, good, you’re here. Your client’s name is Allison Carmichael. She’s nineteen and this is her first heat. The poor dear is quite nervous. I think she almost had a panic attack. She’s also late for scheduling. I’m not even sure we’ll be able to help her, but I didn’t want to cause additional stress by saying so. I’ll defer to your judgment, though.”

I’d worked with challenging clients before. There was a reason heat helpers were nurses as much as we were sex workers. Not everyone took the best care of themselves, and it was our job to get them through their heat regardless of what condition they showed up in.

“I’ll be extra gentle,” I promised.

“Oh, hey. You’re here for the new omega?” Carla asked, sweeping down the hall. The blonde alpha was another heat helper, and one of the few people I considered a friend among my coworkers.

“Yeah, just about to head in,” I replied.

“Poor thing is right on the edge. I had to haul out the de-scenting spray so she didn’t freak out the other clients before the ventilation system got her scent swept out of here.”

I searched for hints of her in the air. A fleeting whisper of her fear lingered, priming me to care for the omega waiting for me.

“She’s in the meeting room,” Muriel told me. “You can go in whenever.”

“Good luck,” Carla said with a smile. “I hope it all goes smoothly. I’ll cross all my fingers and toes for you.”

I crossed my own fingers as I walked past her to the meeting room, letting my fingertips rest on the doorknob and taking a few deep breaths to make sure my energy was as calm as possible.

The omega was curled up in a ball on the couch when I pushed open the door, her energy frenetic, and her brown eyes wild. She opened her mouth to speak, but only a whine left her lips. The omega clapped her hand over her mouth before burying her face in her hands with a groan.
