"Are we being rescued?" I ask anyone around me, but no one answers me.

After about fifteen minutes, the forcefield on our cages is lifted, and we are directed through the ship. As we are all walking towards the exit, one of the soldiers in black begins yelling and running towards us. Just as he is about to reach me, I suddenly feel a sharp pain on my side. I look down, and I'm bleeding. I hold the blood and want to speak, but I don't have any words. I fall down, and the woman I first talked to leans over me, cradling my head in her bloody hands. "I wanted to save you from them. Go to your human heaven. It's better than being any Alliance man's pet."

I close my eyes. I didn't expect my life to end this way.

I wake up in a medical center. I think this all must have been a dream. Maybe I was in a traffic accident and was in a coma and dreamed all of this up.

A woman in uniform I don't recognize comes over to me. "Ivy Jefferies?"

"Yes. Where am I?"

The woman only hesitates for a second. "You're on the Alliance Force Base."

"Where is that?"

"My name is Caroline. I'm a nurse, and I'm here to help you. I'm going to be very frank with you, but I need you to be very open-minded as well. I don't want to upset you."

"Why would I need to be open-minded?" I ask suspiciously. I investigate my side where I was stabbed. "What happened to everyone else? Or was that a dream?" I'm really worried that I've been trafficked, and I've been given hallucinations to make me think aliens did it rather than just really bad people.

"Most of the people who were abducted by the Dulu with you have already been returned to Earth," Caroline says in a matter-of-fact tone.

"There's that word again, 'Dulu.' Am I losing my mind? Is this a mental institution? I know I've been under a lot of stress, but …"

Caroline puts a brown hand on my shoulder. "No, you're perfectly healthy. 'Dulu' is the name for a group of green genderless aliens. You must have seen some while you were on board their ship?"

"This can't be real. It's just a nightmare."

"It's no nightmare."

"Are you part of some secret government space program then?"

"Something like that," Caroline replies. "But not a human government program."

"What are you saying?" I ask, my voice revealing my uneasiness.

"It's an alien government that protects Earth. They're almost genetically the same as humans and view humanity as theirs."

"But we're not. Are we?”

She shrugs. "It doesn't matter. The Alliance Empire has decided. Humans can't even get to Mars. Humanity refuses to join the Galactic Court, and because of that, humanity doesn't get to have any say in how humanity is viewed in the galaxy."

"That sounds horrible if it were true."

"It is."

"What does this have to do with me? Why are you telling me this? Aren't you going to send me back to Earth with the others?" I still think this must be a dream.

"We can't."

"Why not?"

Caroline points to the bracelet Sem gave me and to my Greek wedding band.

"I don't understand."

"You're married to an Alliance Officer."
