"Sem didn't tell you?"

"No, he said it was better, I don't know, so I wouldn't worry about it."

Caroline shakes her head. "You'll be fine. One thing about Alliance men is that they worry about the women in their lives way too much. That's one of the biggest cultural differences. They see women as strong in our intellect but physically weaker and take it on as their responsibility, and historically their only responsibility, to keep us healthy and safe at all costs. I bet he's fretting over your punishment more than his own."

"I have noticed this," I remark, thinking about all the times he made sure I had eaten or if I even looked like I might have hurt myself, how he pampered me. "But if that's the worst thing…"

"It is, for the most part, I swear to you as one human woman to another."

“I do love Sem. But I don't know if I'm ready for all of this and a public sex marriage ceremony to top it all off."

"I'm sure Sem told you the history behind why they do it?"

"He did, but it didn’t make it anymore, okay. Did you really go through with that?"

"I did. And I drank a whole bottle of bourbon beforehand. Since then, I've been a witness to perhaps twenty more Alliance marriage ceremonies between human women and Alliance men here on the base. There's nothing shameful about it. It actually gets pretty dull after a while. Most people have sex in the same way with few surprises. Surprises I’ll only tell you about if you stay," she adds with a devious smile.

"I've never seen another couple having sex in real life, and I can't imagine doing it myself," I admit. "I'm not a porn star and never dreamed about being one."

"Is that the only thing holding you back from marrying Sem? The public sex?"

"It's a big factor."

"I'm glad I stopped by then. I can give you a popular form of medicine used for marriage ceremonies so you will feel less embarrassed, but you will still be in your right mind, if you know what I mean?"

"A drug?"

"Yes."

"Thank you, but I don't…"

"Do you want to be in limbo, or do you want to get on with this?"

"There's another matter."

"What?"

"Eggs were stolen from me when I was abducted the first time. How would I go about finding out where those went?"

Caroline leans back in her chair and thinks. "Well, the Dulu ship was confiscated by the GC, but no doubt the Dulu bought it back with everything in it. Since the Alliance Force didn't know about the eggs unless they were looking for them, they probably weren't found and sold somewhere on the black market. The closest place to GC HQ is Gala Station. I would check there."

"They would be listed?"

"Absolutely. The Dulu would say they were 'donated.' There are enough humans in the galaxy that could be true, but even if you were able to prove they were yours, you would have to buy them back, and that wouldn't be cheap. That's a lot of UCs."

"But it's possible?"

"Of course."

"How do I make UCs?"

Caroline laughs. "Sell your eggs."

I can't help but feel down. "If you had some of your eggs stolen, wouldn't you want them back?"

"The probability that they could actually be used to create life, as I'm sure the doctor told you, is slim to none. Interspecies procreation isn't easy. I'd say if you are religious, trust in your faith on this one. Those eggs' fates are out of your control."

"And that's it?"
