I stutter in shock before replying, “It’s not like that.”

“It’s a gift,” he then says with a smirk. “I can read lies easily. I can smell them before they’ve even left your mouth. I’m also good at reading body language. My mum used to say I was blessed. Little did she know, it’s actually a curse.”

“Bet it’s a barrel of laughs being your girlfriend,” I mutter.

“So why the big secret? I assume you were before the fiancée?” He pauses, then realisation hits him. “Unless you’re still hooking up?”

“Can we drop it now? I’m grateful for the rescue and all, but seriously, I’m not talking about my life with a stranger.”

“Who do you talk to?” he asks, and I frown. “Everyone needs someone.” Great, just what I needed, to be reminded I have no one. “It sounds like you’re always there for everyone else.”

“I’m not paying for therapy,” I point out coldly, and he grins.

“Sorry, bad habit of mine.”

“I’m really not good company right now, but thanks for the help.” It’s a hint for him to leave but he stays put.

“If you ask me, he’s a dick.”

“Oh god,” I groan, “please don’t hit on me.”

His eyes widen. “God, no, I wouldn’t dream of it,” he says a little too quickly. I’m offended by his obvious repulsion towards me, and he jumps in to correct his error. “Sorry, I don’t mean it like that. I know you like a good time and shit, but I’m really not looking for anything . . . at all.”

“A good time?” I gasp.

“Er, fuck, I keep putting my foot in it.”

“Who told you that?” I practically wail.

“Look, this isn’t how I wanted this conversation to go. I’m really sorry.”

I sigh heavily. This night just keeps getting better. “Come on,” I say, standing. He looks confused. “You’re buying me cheesy potato wedges or something equally as calorific to make up for your awkward conversation and irritatingly accurate views of me.”

I watch Raven shovel food into her mouth like she’s not eaten in weeks. She catches me staring and slows down, pressing her lips together. “Sorry, I’m always hungry after I’ve had a drink.”

“No, please, carry on. It’s like watching a nature show with David Attenborough,” I say, grinning. She knocks her shoulder into mine and smiles. It’s nice to see her smile.

“Why London?” she asks.

“Why not?”

A rowdy group of men pass, and we fall silent for a few minutes. “We have this agreement,” she eventually says. “We hook up, but if there’s anyone else, we stop.”

“I think he’s made it pretty clear he’s met someone else.” She nods sadly. “Maybe it’s time you did the same. That way, there’s no going back.” She nods again.

“How do you forget someone? How do you stop thinking about them?”

I smirk. “Fuck knows, but when you find out, let me know.”

“Who are you trying to forget?”

“We’re not here to talk about me.”

Raven’s mobile lights up and silently flashes in her hand. She stares at it. “It’s him,” she says. It stops flashing briefly, only for it to start seconds later.

“Ignore it. He’s got a fiancée.”

A text message appears, and she shakes her head as she reads it. “He wants me to go to him.”

“Do you want to?”

She nods. “But I shouldn’t.”

“You really shouldn’t.”

She hands me her phone. “Keep it for me, then I can’t answer it.” I tuck it in my pocket and stand, holding out my hand to help pull her up. The second we connect, it’s exactly the same as before and that buzz of static shoots up my arm.
