“Exactly. He went running after her, leaving me there. I mean, of course, he did, she’s his fiancée, so I don’t know why it hurt me so much. But it did.” I go to the living room and drop on the couch.

“There are other men out there, ones who aren’t attached to a shit load of baggage. Why’s he marrying her anyway, if he was with you?”

“He wasn’t with me, technically. I told you, we were hooking up, not dating. We never went to a restaurant unless it was for business meetings. He never even kissed me until . . .” I trail off, remembering the way his lips felt against mine when he finally kissed me.

“You fell for a man who never kissed you?” he asks sceptically. “Kissing is the connection.”

“Maybe that’s why he avoided it. I wonder if he’s kissed Sofia,” I mutter.

“If you’re gonna get all mushy on me, I’m off,” says Mac. “And I’m pretty sure he’s done more than kiss her. They’re getting married.”

“Apparently, she’s untouched. Saved for her husband-to-be,” I say dryly.

Mac’s eyes almost bug out of his head. “She’s a virgin?”

“According to Gia, if the woman is promised, she has to be pure.”

“Shit. I wanna marry into the mafia.”

I laugh. “So, you’re a man-whore?” He falls silent, keeping his eyes fixed to the floor, and a look of pain flashes over his face. Maybe he’s been cheated on. At least, that’s the impression I get, and he’s avoiding Ruby’s call, whoever the hell that is. “Speaking of which, did you ever take Ruby’s call?”

“Yah know, I brought you here to get your head straight, not to talk about my fuck-up of a life,” he jokes, taking a seat beside me.

“Maybe it’ll make me feel better to know your life is messier than mine.”

He grins. “Nice try. Who was your last relationship before Vinn? Maybe you can go back there to help you get over him?”

I laugh. “Women don’t work like that. Besides, Chains was before Vinn, although it wasn’t a relationship.”

“Another no strings hook-up, huh?” I nod in response. I never wanted more before now. Maybe it’s my age or the fact everyone has someone and I don’t. “What’s your longest actual relationship?” he asks.

I bite my lip. “I haven’t had one.”

He glares at me. “Never?”

I shake my head. “You?”

He seems to think it over, and I can tell he doesn’t want to talk about himself, but he eventually answers. “A long time. I was with her since leaving school at sixteen.”

“Jesus,” I gasp, “childhood sweethearts?”

“Yeah.” He smiles like he’s thinking about that memory. “Eighteen years.”

“Shit, thinking about that gives me hives,” I joke. “How do you heal your heart after that length of time?”

He shrugs. “I don’t know if you ever do.”

“Kids?” I ask, and he shakes his head.

“Eighteen years and no fucking kids?”

“She couldn’t have them,” he admits.

“Siblings?” I ask, remembering what Vinn told me about him losing his brother.

“No.”

“Me either
