Chapter Nine

RAVEN

Mac’s angry with me, and I don’t blame him. Something about watching Vinn last night had me all heated up, and the second we stepped into the office, I wanted him to kiss me. I need distraction, so after breakfast, I head into Riggs’ office. He looks at me with suspicion. “Got time for a chat?” I ask.

“Depends what it’s about.”

“I need to be kept busy. If I was to drop some hours at Vinn’s, could you give me work?”

“What kind of work?”

“Stuff I usually do.” I’ve helped the club out a lot. I’m good at getting enemies to talk. He often sends me to places to scope them out or find someone they need to speak to. I’m less obvious than a big biker.

“I can’t let you on club runs no more, Raven. Sorry.”

“Why?”

“You’re an ol’ lady now. It’s Mac’s call.”

“Mac won’t care. We both know he’s not serious about all this. He’s just helping me out.”

Riggs goes to the door and shouts for Mac to join us, which he does. “Your ol’ lady wants to work for me again. I told her I gotta run it by you.”

“Doing what?” asks Mac.

“She scopes places. I’ve got this guy I need spotting,” says Riggs, placing a picture in front of us. “She’s good at surveillance.”

“Women don’t get involved in club shit,” says Mac, and I glare at him, burning holes in the side of his head. Riggs shrugs at me.

“I’ve been involved since I came here,” I point out.

“It’s outta my hands,” says Riggs.

“Are we done here?” asks Mac, standing.

“No, we’re not fucking done. You don’t get a say in what I do around here.”

Mac smiles and it’s obvious he’s still pissed about last night. “Oh, but I do, Raven. I do.”

“This isn't funny,” I snap.

“It ain’t meant to be,” he mutters, heading out the office, and I rush after him.

“Mac, I’m serious. I need distracting.”

“To forget a man who treats you like fucking shit?” he snarls, and I back off. “To forget someone who makes you his second best? Fuck, Raven, if you need a distraction to forget someone like that, maybe you need more help than I can offer.”

If he knew how true that statement was, he wouldn’t have said it in such a cruel way. I blink back tears, which only angers me. I hate crying in front of people. “Well, at least I don’t run from my problems. At least I don’t ignore the calls to pretend everything is okay.”

“You don’t know anything about my life.”

“And you don’t know anything about mine.” We’re at a standoff. No one’s gonna win here, so I head up to my room to dress for work.

When I’m ready, Mac is waiting for me on his bike. “I can drive myself,” I mutter.

“Get on the bike,” he orders, and I roll my eyes but get on. If he wants to be a damn chauffeur in this fake relationship, let him.

Vinn isn’t in when I arrive, but Sofia is. It takes me by surprise. “Good morning,” I say as brightly as I can. “I’m not sure what time Mr. Romano is in today. Would you like me to call him?”
