Brick screws his face up. “Don’t say that.”

“What should I say?”

“I haven’t got a fucking clue, brother, but that’s a little blunt. I don’t see the problem, anyway. She’s your ol’ lady, right? It’s not the usual way, but there’s nothing to say you can’t fall in love over time. She’s a great woman.”

“I was just saving her from Vinn, man. I can’t give her a relationship. I’m staying away from that sort of thing.”

“Oh. Well, for the record, you’re not giving off those signals.” Ace laughs harder, fist bumping Brick. I take large swigs of whiskey, enjoying the feel of it burning my throat. Raven loves Vinn, so she won’t see anything in that kiss. I’ll explain, and she’ll be fine about it.

I stay with the guys a while longer, drinking whiskey and talking shit to pass time. I’m putting off speaking to Raven. I don’t know why. I eventually take a breath and head back inside. She’s still with the girls, laughing and drinking wine. I smile when her laugh rings out. I like to see her happy.

A hand presses against my chest, stopping me in my stride. I glance down at the red painted nails and then into the blue eyes of Kiera. “Hey, gorgeous,” she smiles.

“Hey.”

“You look like you’ve had a rough day. You need some help to relax tonight?” I glance at Raven, and Kiera runs her nail along my jawline. “Raven told me about you two.” My heart stutters. Raven’s staked her claim, and for some reason, that makes me smile. “And she said you weren’t actually together. She said you were free as a bird.” My heart twists. Why? At least, I know Raven understands the kiss meant nothing. Nothing. “So, what do you say?” It’s been a while since I’ve shared my bed in that way. The kiss with Raven was the first kiss in months and the most I’ve actually done. I take Kiera’s hand and stare at her pointed red nails. “Imagine them,” she says, leaning close and pressing her mouth to my ear, “around your cock.” Her words stir something inside.

“Can you give me a minute to talk to Raven?” I ask.

“Of course.” She places a kiss on my cheek and heads back to the club girls.

“Raven, can I have a word?”

She stands, smiling, and I lead her to another table. “Everything okay?” she asks.

“Yeah. I just wanted to apologise for kissing you earlier. It was out of order.”

She blushes, lowering her eyes. “Don’t apologise, it’s fine.”

“I didn’t want to give you the wrong idea—”

She cuts in before I can finish, laughing. “It didn’t. Not at all. In fact, Kiera just came and asked about us. I told her we’re just friends, and you’re free to do whatever . . . you want to do . . . yah know, because you’re free and shit.”

“Great, so that’s clear then, because the guys were just giving me shit about it, saying you’d see something into it, and I wanted to set it straight. Yah know, cos I know Vinn’s already being an arse, and I didn’t want you to think I was like him.” I’m babbling, and she smiles, placing her hand over mine. I take a breath and laugh nervously. “Sorry, I’m making this awkward.”

“Have a great night with Kiera. Make sure you show her how a girl should be kissed.” I watch her head back to the ol’ ladies. So, that’s clear then . . . she gets it. So, why does my heart ache?
