“Click what?”

“The screen!”

“What screen?”

His voice growled.

I touched my forehead. “I got you a laptop. And an email address.”

“That hunk of junk?”

“Do you know what you can do with a laptop? You can spend hours on the internet looking up hockey stuff.”

“What do I need to look up? I know everything!”

I rolled my eyes.

Of course you know everything. You stubborn old man.

“I have a work email I’m afraid to look at it.”

“Afraid? Of what?”

“Rejection.”

“Oh, Sage,” he growled. “You can’t live your life in fear. And think about all this time you’re now wasting. If you got rejected you should be working harder. If you got the job you could be working right now.”

“I know. I’m nervous. Will you stay on the phone with me while I look?”

“Of course I will,” my grandfather said.

I smiled.

He always tried to be stern with me but whether he wanted to admit it or not I had him wrapped around my finger. I always had. I always would.

“Okay, I’m clicking,” I said.

I opened the email.

I read it in silence.

I walked away from my laptop.

“Sage?”

“I got it,” I whispered.

“You got it?”

“I got it! I got the gig! My first real project!”

“I knew you could do it.”

“This is huge for me. This is the start. I told you I was going to make this work.”

“I never doubted you for a second, Sage.”

“I’m going to buy a house.”
