I accidentally bumped the pregnancy test off the bathroom sink.

It hit the floor and flipped over.

I crouched down and reached with a shaking hand to flip the pregnancy test over.

“Oh, shit,” I said out loud.

I was pregnant.

Chapter Twenty-Five

SAGE

I had so much caffeine pumping through my veins all I could do was smell the fresh cup of coffee instead of drinking it. Standing at the sink, looking out at the amazing view, doing all that I could to avoid the horrible feeling of loneliness that parked itself so comfortably inside my chest.

Work had dried up a little for me.

Everyone knew about my grandfather and I was being given the unrequested gift of time to relax and grieve.

All I wanted to do was work.

Being in my own house like this began to drive me a little crazy.

I dumped the coffee, walked to the pocket doors and began to open them.

As soon as I smelled my grandfather’s scent, I shut the doors.

I stepped back as my throat closed up and I covered my mouth. My eyes filled with tears as I stared ahead at the pocket doors.

That twisting and sinking feeling… when will it go away?

My left butt cheek vibrated and I pulled my phone out of my tight pocket and saw a text from Alex.

What’s the plan today? Clean out the room or get drunk? (And then clean out the room)

Alex had a pushy way about her. She meant well and she would never back down. In reality she was right about the room. I had to get it cleaned out. I had to reclaim it as part of my house. There was zero chance my grandfather would want me to act like this after his passing. Even Travis started to get on my back about it. He didn’t like how morbid it felt walking by the room and that we kept the doors closed like there was some haunted secret in there.

I know you’re reading this. And I know you aren’t going to ignore me. Don’t make me just show up with cheap wine…

I smiled.

Alex… hello. I’m standing at the pocket doors. I can’t do this today. I know I need to. And I want to do it alone.

I knew she wouldn’t accept that answer.

The little dots popped up right away.

SMELLS LIKE BULLSHIT TO ME

It was. Total and complete bullshit.

I’m sorry. Can I promise you we will do it together soon? I’ll meet you halfway. You can help. But I’ll choose when.

Her response was an eye rolling emoji.

That was as good as we were both going to get from each other.

I turned and made a dash for the stairs and went up to clean… something.
