“I’m sorry,” Travis said. “But I can’t take it anymore, Mom. What are you going to do with the house now? It’s so eerie in there. And the front room… we can’t even use it. Yet we know what’s in there. What is happening?”

His voice crackled.

I had no response for him.

I wish I did.

My stalling was now hurting my son.

Then - as if I needed it - Tad texted me again.

Travis glanced at my phone and made a groaning sound that made me feel like the worst mother ever.

I turned the wheel to the right and slammed on the brakes.

“Mom!” Travis cried out.

“Hey,” I said. “Listen. What if I told you we can bolt out of here for a little while? Just you and me. We can just pack up and go.”

“What?”

“What do you say? I’ve got it figured out. Pack a bag and we leave…”

“Forever?”

“No. Not forever. Just for a little bit. To get out of this town. Catch our breath. Clear our head.”

“Um… sure…”

I licked my lips.

I was talking faster than I was thinking.

But we needed this.

Travis needed to get out of here.

I needed to get out of here.

Now I just needed to find out if Henry was going to keep to his promise…

Chapter Twenty-Six

HENRY

“You know, this is how guys like us get hurt and it becomes headline news,” I announced, instantly realizing I began to kill the buzz.

They all looked at me, including Joe.

“Yeah, I know,” I said. “Good guy Henry. I’ll shut up now.”

“It’s just for fun,” Jago said. “He’s not going to take a game-winning one-timer at me, Henry. Deep breaths, man. It’ll be fine.”

“And if he gets hurt, then we finally get a decent goalie,” Rome said.

“Fuck you,” Jago said as he laughed.

“I heard a rumor we were looking at Portmonth from Boston,” Seb said. “Imagine him in net?”
