He grabbed a bottle of water and went upstairs.
I helped myself to an ice-cold beer.
My body ached like after a good hockey practice session.
A good ache. A fun ache.
A million new memories in my mind… with the crushing feeling wondering if the memories were made as a father or a friend.
“Hey, want to hear something insane?” Sage asked.
I turned and saw her walking toward me.
Her skin had a sweet pink hue to it. The sun had left its mark on her.
Her hair was messy from the wind and the helmet.
So perfectly beautiful.
Now my heart began to race just looking at her.
“What’s insane, Sage?”
“My son is taking a nap right now.”
“What?”
She nodded. “The last time he took a nap was when he had the flu. You wore him out, Henry.”
“He almost wore me out,” I said.
“Can I hire you?”
“Sure, honey. I’m at your service.”
We approached each other. She reached up and touched my chest.
“I have to say something, Henry.”
“I’m listening.”
“I need to know if you’re mad at me. I’m not looking for pity or anything like that. I want you to feel how you need to feel. But I need to know. After last night…”
I slowly shook my head. “I could never be mad at you. Everyone makes decisions in their own way and for their own reason. And truthfully, Sage, since we’re getting into this deep stuff, I have to say something too.”
She nodded.
“I love you, Sage,” I said. “I’m sure you know that already. I’ve loved you since we were teenagers. I never stopped. Not for a second. I loved you ten years ago when we met up that one night. And I love you right now. I don’t think I can ever stop loving you. That’s just the way it is. This idea of family… it feels okay with me…”
Sage stepped back and took her hands away from me. “Thank you for sharing that with me. I’m not running off, okay? I’m just going to go for a quick walk.”
Sage put a finger to her lips.
“What is happening right now?” I asked.
“If you must know, I need to go to the bathroom.”
I tell her I love her and she has to go pee?
