“Still not a shark!” Keith yelled. “This guy can’t hang with us!”

Everyone cheered and agreed.

“One more try!” Keith announced.

More cheers and agreements.

Keith slammed the freshman’s head down again.

I had seen enough.

I shouldn’t just walk away…

But I did.

I turned and began to hurry toward the door.

This whole thing was absolutely disgusting.

And if that guy did die and I did nothing…

I hugged myself and felt my eyes fill with tears.

I ran out of the house and down the porch steps.

“Where to, baby girl?” someone said to me.

I kept going, even though I was sort of in the middle of nowhere.

Rebecca’s house was the party house because she lived so far away and secluded.

No way the cops would ever bust up a party here.

Not unless someone drowned in a punchbowl…

I gasped for a breath.

I felt a hand on my shoulder.

“Where the hell are you off to?” Keith’s voice asked.

I stopped and spun around.

His eyes were bloodshot, glazed, mean and drunk, and craving violence.

“I can’t watch that stuff,” I said.

“A little harmless fun?”

“That was not harmless, Keith. His nose is probably broken. And you were drowning him!”

“I was not drowning him. He’s fine. Nothing bad happened.”

“It could have. It takes one extra second and-”

“Mitt Bobosky did it to me when I was a freshman,” Keith said. “Okay? Same thing. I was on the football team. Before my knee got all fucked up. We all go through it.”

“I almost witnessed a murder and you don’t care!” I screamed.
