I’m out front. Not sure if you want Travis to see me? He left something at the house. Wanted to return it.

Alex and I looked at each other at the same time.

“If you don’t end up with that man, I’m making my move,” Alex whispered.

“Shut up and help me,” I said.

Henry was here. Again.

This was going to be my last chance, no matter what…

I opened the door and there he stood.

He held out a video game controller.

He wasn’t lying.

Of course not.

Why would Henry ever lie to me…

“Found it under the bed,” he said. “Figured the kid would need it.”

“He’s actually upstairs with Mitch right now. He was pissed he lost it.”

“Perfect,” Henry said. “Not sure what you said to him…”

“He thinks you’re out of town right now. I panicked. I… I fucked up, Henry…”

Alex stepped up next to me. “Henry. Nice to see you again. So, I’m going to go gather up the boys and take them to the arcade. I’ll sugar them up and take them home.”

“You don’t have to do that,” Henry said. “I wasn’t trying to…”

“Shut up,” Alex said to Henry.

“Alex,” I said, turning my head.

“No,” Alex said. “I’m taking the boys. You two need to talk. End of discussion.”

Alex turned and yelled for Travis and Mitch.

They stomped around the upstairs, then appeared at the top of the steps.

“Is Henry here?” Travis called out. “Awesome! Henry!” He elbowed Mitch. “This is the guy I was telling you about. The hockey player. Told you I wasn’t lying. This guy is awesome. Took me on a quad and then we went surfing.”

My throat and chest tightened up as Travis ran down the stairs to greet Henry.

He all but jumped into Henry’s arms.

“Hey, kid,” Henry said.

“Mom said you were out of town,” Travis said.

“I stopped at the beach house and found your controller.”

“Nice! Thanks, Henry!”

“We’re going out,” Alex said. “I’m taking you fools to the arcade. My treat. Unlimited games!”
