I pulled the door shut and the lights turned out.

All we had now was the glow of the red and blues from the dashboard.

I shivered.

Without questioning me, Henry turned on the heat.

“Were you busy?” I asked.

“Me? No.”

“You’re kind of sweaty.”

“Oh. I was at the gym.”

“So you were busy.”

“Just a workout. That’s all. I was actually finishing up when you called me.”

“Liar.”

Henry shrugged his shoulders. “Were you trying to walk home?”

“I don’t want to talk about tonight, Henry.”

“Okay. Just know that you’re safe with me. And good ol’ Berta here.”

Henry slapped the dashboard and the heat turned off.

“Oh, shoot,” he whispered.

I covered my mouth, hiding my smile.

Henry smacked the dashboard again and the heat turned back on.

“Good ol’ Berta is touchy,” he said.

“Maybe because you named it Berta.”

“Are you picking on me right now, Sage?”

“Maybe I am,” I said.

Henry smiled.

And he started to drive.

I couldn’t wait to get away from that stupid party and that asshole Keith. As time ticked along and as the distance closed in between me and my grandfather’s house, I found myself feeling a little weird thing in the pit of my stomach. I had the urge to reach over and touch Henry’s hand and tell him to just keep driving. To cruise around town. Or find somewhere to park. That I would give him gas money.

I just didn’t want this moment to end.

I wasn’t sure why.

Henry pulled up to the house and parked the SUV.

“I can walk you to the door.”

“And get murdered by my grandfather?” I asked.
