I glanced at his right hand and saw his knuckles were raw and a little swollen.

After a minute of silence, he let out a growling noise.

“I wanted to keep hitting him,” Henry said. “I wanted to destroy him for hurting you. Nobody is allowed to do that. Ever.” He looked at me. “Do you hear me, Sage? Nobody gets to treat you like that, no matter what. Ever!”

I nodded.

My throat clenched for a second.

I never felt so safe in all my life.

“I’m so angry right now,” Henry said. He looked forward again. “I feel like I could explode…”

He growled and then took an unexpected left turn.

I let out a yell as the tires squealed.

We were in the empty parking lot with an old vacant building that used to be the town’s grocery store.

It was a common spot to park behind and have kissing sessions. Or other things in the back seat of a vehicle.

There were a lot of drugs and stuff too.

Every once in a while someone would break into the store and the cops would show up, then things would quiet down for a bit before the parking lot got used again.

Henry drove around to the back of the building and put the SUV into park.

“Sorry,” he said. “I just need a second to think. I just…”

His voice trailed as I threw myself across the front seat at him.

My right elbow hit the steering wheel and my arm tingled.

I touched Henry’s face.

My body was kind of sideways.

I was kind of laying on his lap.

It was totally awkward and far from being sexy or romantic at all.

But all it took was one look into each other’s eyes and we started kissing.

And I mean… kissing.

There was no testing the waters with a little peck.

No talking about the stupid rule my grandfather made up to keep me away from Henry.

We just went for it.

Full blown kissing.

Intense making out.

Henry touched my left hip.

His left hand touched the back of my head.
