My nose looked small and fat. My cheeks puffy like a squirrel collecting acorns for winter. And my hair. Oh, my poor hair. A total frizz show. The attempt of using hair spray and a hair dryer… I looked like I had stuck my finger in a light socket. No makeup on my face either. My body looked lanky and weird. Little buds showing up top, my belly pushing at the bottom of my shirt. My kneecaps were bigger than the rest of my legs.
Total awkwardness…
“You know what, Henry? Whatever. He was proud of that picture. He loved that picture. I only did that for one season too. I hated it. Too much joyfulness.”
Henry cracked up laughing. He placed the picture on the counter, then jumped up and sat down next to it. “Let’s see it.”
“See… what?”
“The cheers. You have to remember them.”
“Not a chance in hell. I don’t remember a thing. It was an awful time for me. Just look at me in that picture. I was so uncomfortable. Things were happening, Henry.”
“We’ve all been there.”
“Oh?”
“Want to hear the story of my first nocturnal emission…?”
“Is there a picture of it hanging up somewhere?”
“I hope not,” he said. “That’s weird.”
“You know what I mean. An embarrassing moment. A picture. For the world to see.”
“Relax, Sage. You look cute as a button in that picture.”
“Yeah, okay, Henry.”
“I’m serious. Do a cheer for me.”
I tilted my head. “I’m not cheering for anything right now.”
“Then let’s just keep admiring this beautiful photo of you…”
Henry started to pick up the picture and I jumped toward the counter and grabbed his wrist.
Blame it on the booze or blame it on deep desires rushing through my body, but when I grabbed Henry’s hand, I pulled it toward me.
I placed his hand on my right breast.
I kept my hand on his.
No hesitation. No worries. No care.
Even though my heart raced uncontrollably.
“Honey, you’re drunk.”
“So?”
Henry slid off the counter.
He did not remove his hand from my right breast.
His left hand touched my hip.
“Drunk…”
