That was the awful part of it all.

My grandfather was gone. Buried. It all felt weird and real and just… I wasn’t sure of it all yet. And then to keep repeating the same thing over and over. Dealing with the same conversation over and over.

“Knock, knock,” Travis said as he walked into the dining room.

“Hey, big guy,” I said. “Sorry. I’ve been swamped today. Work and phone calls and just…”

Travis grabbed his stomach. “It’s happening again, Mom.”

“Oh, no,” I said as I stood up. “Starvation?”

“It’s so bad.”

“How long…?”

“Three hours.”

“You haven’t eaten in three hours?” I gasped. “My poor son. What am I going to do?”

“Kitchen,” Travis said. “Junk drawer. Menus…” He gasped for a breath. “Armondo’s…”

“Pizza,” I said, shaking my head.

“It’s the quickest option,” Travis said. “I can’t… feel… my legs…”

He slowly inched his way down to the floor and made a gurgling sound.

I immediately began to clap. “What a performance, Travis. You’re going to have a big decision to make in life. Stick with football or become an actor.”

Travis picked his head up. “I can do both. A lot of athletes are in movies. It’s fine.”

Then he put his head back down and faked his own death again.

I stepped over him and went to order pizza.

I called it quits for my workday.

Travis found enough energy to function again, waiting for the pizza to arrive.

When it did, he asked if he could eat in his room.

He and Mitch were going to log onto a game together and hang out.

I sighed and caved.

Travis told me I was the best mother in the world.

I even got a fist bump from him.

It felt like it was just yesterday when I couldn’t leave the room without him following me. There was once a time I couldn’t even sit down to go pee for a minute without him sitting at the bathroom door, talking to me, making sure I wasn’t going to disappear.

Now I only saw him when he wanted food.

I sighed and got myself a couple slices of pizza and settled onto the couch.

The house was still too eerily quiet for me.

I did a little channel surfing and ended up stopping during the commercial break of a hockey game.
