In fact, I’m the only one from the hockey team here.

Well, the only one that matters.

Some of the younger guys are here, hoping to hook up with pretty girls, drink until they puke, and find a place to cement their feet in the world of Puckford University.

All they need to do is watch and learn behind us, because we’re out of here sooner rather than later.

I’m only here for one reason.

A cheerleader.

I stand with my back against a wall, one foot up, and I scan the room.

The cheerleaders all flock together.

Bubbly and beautiful.

Such high-maintenance girls, but that’s what I need right now.

I lock eyes with a green-eyed girl. She smiles.

Her blonde hair is twisted up into a bun on the top of her head.

Her eyelashes are a mile long and she has little glitter things next to her eyes.

I sip my drink and look away.

I’ll see if she’s ready or not.

Two seconds later she’s walking toward me.

“The least you can do is get me a drink if you’re going to stare at me like that, Jax,” she says.

It’s a little bit of an odd feeling at times when people know your name but you don’t know theirs.

I grin at her.

“Of course you don’t know my name. You’re the kind of guy I should stay away from.”

“Nobody pushed you over here,” I say.

“Going to get me that drink?”

“I’ve got one better for you,” I say as I push away from the wall. I inch closer to her. “There’s no way you’re enjoying yourself at this party.”

“You have a better party to go to?”

“Private party. Only two people invited.”

“Wow. You’re fast. You don’t know my name and you’re already inviting me back to your dorm.”

“Let me put it to you this way. I was just at a funeral yesterday. Nothing like that to remind you of how quick life can fly right by. So maybe I’m not in the mood to do the flirty little games right now. Staring back and forth. Getting a drink. Sneaking a touch. A kiss. That whole game.”

“Are you using your teammate’s father’s death to try to get into me?”

I smile. “Is that a problem with you?”

“Fundamentally, yes,” she says. “But it just so happens I’m not in a fundamental mood.”
