The wound foamed and my stomach rolled. “I don’t think that can be stitched,” I said. “It’s as wide as my thumb.”

“Butterfly strips are fine,” Aaron instructed.

I picked one up, unwrapping it unsteadily. Before I could place it on, Kieran took it from my hands, pinched the skin together, and applied the bandage. I opened two more for him to secure the hole mostly shut. When he was done, his head fell back against the seat.

“They still following?” he asked Aaron.

“Yep. Gonna lead them north.”

I sat back, closing my eyes, and took a deep, calming breath. The car accelerated on the ramp onto the interstate. When I opened my eyes again, we were weaving between cars, speeding past everyone else.

I couldn’t resist the urge to look behind me, seeing two black SUVs diving between traffic as seamlessly as we were. Cars honked at our narrow passes and I waited to hear the sound of sirens chasing us.

But so far, we were lucky.

Aaron jerked onto the next off-ramp, jarring us all to one side. The light ahead was green, but as we came screaming toward it, still going fifty miles an hour, it turned yellow.

“Shit,” Kieran muttered.

Aaron hit the brakes and then the back of the car was fishtailing out. We sailed through the now-red light just in time for it to be illegal. I put a hand on each front seat to keep myself from going flying.

On the road inside the next town, I spun around, checking to see if they’d followed into traffic. But the two SUVs were stopped at the light while cars passed in front of them. I grinned and whooped, clapping Aaron on the shoulder.

“Great driving there, Dom,” I teased.

Aaron scoffed, navigating to get back onto the interstate headed south. With the most immediate threat off our trail, I settled back in my seat.

“How long of a drive is this going to be?” I asked.

“Take a nap. I’ll wake you when we get there,” Aaron answered. Kieran was well on his way to taking that piece of advice, his head slumped on his shoulder and eyes closed.

I sighed wearily. “How long are we going to be gone? Am I going to have to drop out of school?”

Aaron’s gaze met mine in the mirror. “I’m not sure. But we’ll do everything we can to keep you in good standing at your school. Just rest for now. I’ll have more answers when we get there.”

Tears pricked the back of my eyes. Where was Romero? Were we getting closer or farther away?

Images of him lying in a bed, unconscious and fighting for his life, filled my mind. I sniffled, a tear slipping between my closed eyelids.

The weight of my worries was too heavy, and eventually they dragged me down to the depths of slumber where my dreams, too, were filled with the night’s horrors.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

JULIETTA

Warmth played across my face. A light touch caressed my jaw before a distinct pair of lips pressed to my temple.

My eyelids flew open. Lips parting, I was ready to tear into either Kieran or Aaron, when the face directly in front of mine made my heart stop.

“Romero?” I breathed, wondering if this was somehow a dream. How was he here?

Wait, where am I?

His golden chest was mostly on display except for the bandage wrapping the middle of his torso. He smiled, dark eyes shining with something like joy.

“Estoy tan contenta de verte de nuevo, mi amor,” he said, resting his forehead against mine.

“I’m happy to see you too,” I answered, leaning back to take in more of him. The tattoos of his hard body did things to me that it shouldn’t, considering he was wrapped up. My brows lowered and I frowned. “What happened?”
