Damon Everette - CEO of Everette Industries:I will speak to my mother. Don’t bother planning anything else. I won’t be attending.

Misty Hart - Junior PR representative: But you need to appear to be looking for a wife.

Damon Everette - CEO of Everette Industries:I found one. And everyone who needs to know, knows.

I swallow hard.

Misty Hart - Junior PR representative: You’re really not going to go?

Damon Everette - CEO of Everette Industries:You seem to be under the impression I’m willing to give you up.

Misty Hart - Junior PR representative: Ok, well I guess that means you don’t need me here since I don’t have any work.

Damon Everette - CEO of Everette Industries:I’ll get back to you with the details.

Chapter 27

Damon

“Sign here.” My lawyer hands me a piece of paper, and I sign it without reading. I may have overpaid, but my contracts are solid.

He places another paper on my desk. “Here and here.”

My pen flies over the sheet, blue ink marking the swirls of my signature. Misty’s little I guess you don’t need me text has been a gnawing pain that needled into my side until I found a solution. Sure, I could force her to stay in my building, but I didn’t want her being near me to be a punishment. And something tells me I shouldn’t waste her time.

I considered letting her go back to her old responsibilities, but I didn’t fucking like that idea. So I bought the airline. It was the closest deal we had in negotiations. Sure, we could have negotiated down, but I needed something immediately.

My lawyer gathers the papers from the desk, straightening them before tucking them into a file. “You are all done, sir.”

“Thank you for your help, Maverick. You’ll see your compensation on your next check.”

“That’s too kind of you, Mr. Everette.” He tossed the words out, then disappeared like I’d take his bonus away. He’d earned it. It’s 3:00 a.m., which means he’s been working the last twenty-four hours to get this deal done.

Sleeping next to Misty without touching her is damn near killing me, and my desperation is getting pathetic. But I’d do damn near anything to keep her happy. What’s one company acquisition?

I send her a text, the corner of my lips curling in anticipation of her reaction. Some kind of adorable annoyance mixed with disbelief. Fucking perfect.

Damon Everette: Better hurry and get a press conference planned.

A cackling laugh from across the room has me setting my phone down. I know she’s asleep. I’ve checked.

I lift my glass of whiskey, drain it in one swallow, and ask Bash, “Why are you still here?”

He leans forward, practically peeling himself off the couch. He’d shown up an hour ago, drunk, collapsed on his seat, and passed out.

His smile is mischievous as he drapes both arms over the back of the sofa. “Please tell me you just bought an airline so your wife will hang out with you?”

Chapter 28

Misty

I stare at the text for what must be the twentieth time and rub my fingers into my temple.

Damon Everette: Better hurry and get a press conference planned.

I groan, my head feeling fuzzy. He bought a freaking airline. An airline! When I said I didn’t have work, I didn’t think he’d actually go out and do something crazy. Because this is definitely next-level insane. He probably had this purchase set up in advance because there is no world he went through all of that just to get me to hang out with him. Right? Right?

If I wanted more work, I definitely succeeded. I’m now down to three days to get this planned.
