I blink awake, the sterile scent of the hospital assaulting my senses. My neck aches from dozing off in these godawful chairs. Groggy and disoriented, I glance around the waiting room, trying to remember how I ended up here. Then it hits me like a ton of bricks—Nina’s accident.

“Hey, Conrad.” Brielle’s soft voice cuts through my thoughts as she gently taps my shoulder. Her green eyes are filled with concern, and I can’t help but appreciate her presence despite the circumstances. “Sorry to wake you, but the nurses said Nina will be accepting visitors in less than an hour.”

“Thanks, Brielle,” I reply, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. I shift in my seat, suddenly aware of the dull ache in my lower back. Anxiety and exhaustion mix together in the pit of my stomach, making me feel queasy.

“Are you alright?” she asks, her brow furrowed with worry.

“Yeah, just…tired,” I admit, forcing a weak smile. “How long was I out?”

“Only about an hour,” she answers, offering me a reassuring smile.

“Good, good.” I nod. “Thank you for waking me,” I tell Brielle, my voice barely above a whisper. “You didn’t have to stay, but I’m glad you’re here.”

Brielle’s cheeks turn pink, and she fidgets with her bracelet. “I wanted to be here for you, Conrad. It’s no problem at all.” She glances around the waiting room before asking, “Do you want anything from the vending machine, or a cup of coffee? I was going to go get something.”

“Would you mind if I join you?” I ask, craving her company. She shakes her head, and we both stand.

As we stroll through the halls, it’s hard to ignore the muffled sounds of medical machinery humming around us. I can’t help but notice the ease of our conversation, even in this bleak setting.

As we approach the vending machine, I rack my brain for a way to keep this easygoing connection going. “Hey, how about we play a game of ten questions to pass the time?” I suggest, hoping it’ll give us a chance to learn more about each other.

Brielle’s eyes light up with curiosity. “Sounds fun! I’m always up for getting to know you better, Conrad.”

“Great,” I say, my heart picking up speed as I feed some change into the vending machine. “You can ask the first question.”

“Alright,” she starts, her eyes narrowing playfully as she thinks. “If you could have any superpower, what would it be?”

“Teleportation,” I answer without hesitation. “Imagine all the places I could go without having to deal with airports or traffic.”

“Good choice.” She nods, clearly impressed.

“Alright, my turn,” I say, deciding to ask a more daring question. “What part of my body do you love the most?”

She blushes and looks away for a moment, then meets my gaze with a shy smile. “Your eyes,” she admits, her cheeks still flushed. “They’re gorgeous. I could stare into them for days.”

“Really?” I ask, feeling a thrill at her response. “Well, I must admit that I’m quite fond of your smile.”

“Thanks,” she says, her blush deepening. “Now it’s my turn again. What made you want to become a professor?”

I chuckle and run a hand through my hair. “Well, I’ve always loved the sound of my own voice,” I joke, seeing her smile widen. But then, I grow serious. “Honestly, I enjoy sharing knowledge and helping students reach their full potential. There’s something rewarding about watching them grow and succeed.”

Brielle nods, clearly appreciating my answer. As we continue our game, I find myself becoming more and more captivated by this woman standing beside me. The fluorescent lights flicker above us as I take a moment to consider my next question. It’s my turn again, and I want to keep this game interesting.

“Alright,” I say, my voice lowering, “I have another question for you, Brielle. Do you prefer night or morning sex?”

Her eyes widen slightly, but she bites her lip, considering her answer. I can’t help but notice the way her teeth sink into her plump lower lip, and the urge to taste it myself is overwhelming. Taking a step closer, I lean in and whisper against her neck, “We both know you’re rather adventurous in bed.”

She shivers and tilts her head to look at me. “Daytime sex, actually,” she confesses, her cheeks flushed. “There’s something about the risk of getting caught that turns me on.”

God, this girl?—

“I like that answer.” My hand finds its way to her waist, pulling her closer.

Her breath hitches. “To be honest, Conrad, there’s not much you could do that wouldn’t arouse me.”

My heart pounds, and all I can think about is how much I want her right here, right now. Unable to resist any longer, I lean in and capture her lips with mine, our mouths moving in perfect harmony.

The sound of a throat being cleared shatters our passionate moment like glass. Startled, I pull away from Brielle to find a nurse standing nearby, her expression both stern and amused.
