Page 9 of Bitterly Cold

“Why not? I won’t tell what you’ve been up to.”

Ray sighed into the phone like he was considering it. “I’ll send you the address. Just be discreet. Don’t want Birdie or Ember to see you.” He ended the call before I could ask why the fuck he was watching them.

The address came through and it was a medical clinic. Was one of the girls sick? My chest tightened as I pulled out of the parking lot. Birdie’s pretty face flashed behind my eyes, then Ember’s. I didn’t want either of them to be ill. But part of me hoped it was Birdie and not Ember.

A bitter taste of betrayal tainted the sweet candy on my tongue. I shouldn’t wish that my best friend was sick, so that Ember would be okay. What a shitty way to think.

Birdie and Ember were both okay. I refused to believe anything less.

But I still threw up a prayer for them, just in case.

Twenty minutes later, I spotted Ray’s truck and parked a few spots behind him and went over. When he saw me, he jerked his chin and unlocked the door.

“Hey.” I hopped in and closed the door. “They still inside?”

“Yeah.” He grabbed my bicep and shook me. “Good to see you, cuz.” His words didn’t match his expression. He looked fucking worried, with a deep crease between his eyebrows.

Raymond was almost thirty-five and single. The only women I’d seen him with were the club’s kittens. He’d been promoted to VP last summer after his older brother, Track, retired. It seemed the Montez men were the best vice presidents, but I had no desire to be VP. I wanted to be an enforcer and Maddox knew it.

“What do you know?” I nodded toward the building.

“Not much. The girls are inside with Tara. It could be she’s the one with the appointment. I should’ve had Grizz look into it, but I wanted to avoid questions.”

“I don’t get it. Why would he question you? You’re the VP.”

“Because I’m confident it’s not Tara and I wouldn’t be nosing around if it were Ember.” He avoided my gaze. Nothing more needed to be said. His concern was for Birdie, not Ember.

“I’ll go do some recon.” I pulled out my beanie from my coat pocket and put my sunglasses on.

“No. They might see you.”

“Dude. Nobody will see me. This is my job. Be back in ten.” I opened and shut the door. Stalking toward the building, I slowed my pace in case Ray called me back. He didn’t, which told me he wanted answers about as bad as me.

I entered the building and went straight for the directory on the wall. It was clear this clinic catered to women’s issues.

A familiar giggle made the hairs on the back of my neck rise. Birdie. I froze and kept facing the board. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the three girls coming in my direction. Dammit, I prayed they didn’t notice me.

“Well, it’s done now and there’s no turning back,” Birdie said.

“Yup,” Ember replied.

“I need a drink and cheese curds. I can’t believe what I just witnessed.” Tara laughed nervously. “My nerves are freaking out.”

“Mine were too, during the procedure. We could’ve done it at home instead of here.” Birdie giggled again, which reminded me of her mom, Maddy. “But peace came over me the second it was over with. If it’s meant to be, it will happen.”

Where the fuck was Birdie talking about? What did she do? What procedure?

The trio strolled behind me and left the building. I went in the direction they’d come from and removed my sunglasses. Several women were seated in the waiting area.

Ray would probably be pissed, but I had to know who had an appointment.

“Can I help you?” the lady at the desk asked.

“I’m looking for my friends. They were here for an appointment, and I was late. Two redheads and a brunette.”

“Oh, yes. They just left.”

“Dang it.” I slumped against the desk like a disappointed pussy. “I hope everything went well for her. Can’t believe I missed it.”
