The jury was still out on that one, but she thought she might give it a go. What did she have to lose? The odds were better than fifty/fifty that she’d let him into her heart again. The truth was, she wanted to.

“Oh, there, listen.” The strains of It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year began to play as she found the tin of instant cocoa and began heating water in the microwave. “Told you.”

“Hey, Mom?”

“Mmm?”

“Ick! Gross!”

“What?” She looked across the living area to the tree and her daughter, who was opening the lid of a box that Lucy had nearly forgotten existed.

“What’re these?” Renee’s face twisted into an expression of disgust as she pulled two heads from the ornament box. Glitter Hair Barbie and Sun Jewel Ken. And on Renee’s finger, a ring with a ruby stone that was slightly too big. “Should I hang them on the tree?” She looked skeptical.

“Better not. Might freak out your dad,” Lucy said. She thought about reprimanding her daughter and saying something like, “You know better than to touch Mommy’s things.”

But she didn’t.

And she wouldn’t.

Not ever.
