He kissed the tips of his fingers and pressed them to the photo. “It’s almost time, my love.”

A cold shiver ran down Ellie’s spine. She squeezed Cal’s hand tightly. His grip on her tightened in response, offering silent comfort.

Hopeful crossed back to the desk and pulled a package out of one of the drawers. Then, after one last look around, he left.

They stayed frozen in the wardrobe a few minutes longer until Cal dared to crack open the door.

“Fuck,” he said on a harsh exhale and helped her out of the wardrobe. “That was too close. Let’s go.”

“Wait.” She grabbed Hope’s journal and stuffed it into the pocket of her robe.

Cal gave her a nod of approval before grabbing the box of tapes and shoving as many as he could into his pockets. While he concealed the recorder against his chest, she headed for the door, poking her head out to ensure the coast was clear. Seeing no one, she slipped out, Cal hot on her heels.

As soon as they were safely back in their cabin, Ellie threw herself into Cal’s arms. She didn’t think about it—it was just a natural reaction, like drawing breath.

“Oh my God. I can’t believe he didn’t catch us.”

“Hopeful’s gonna shit bricks when he realizes we’ve got his dirty little secrets,” Cal said with a grin.

She grinned back at him, and in an instant, something changed. The lingering charge between them sparked to life. Their lips met with an urgency that had nothing to do with the danger nipping at their heels and everything to do with the raw need coursing through them.

He pushed Ellie against the door, crushing her to him. His hands went to her waist, pulling her up on her tiptoes. Her fingers raked through his hair as her glasses skewed to the side, fogging up in the heat of their shared breath.

She could feel his cock hardening against her belly, and a thrill heated her blood.

Cal broke the kiss first. He kissed a trail down her throat, teeth grazing her skin. “We have got to stop,” he murmured, though he didn’t sound convinced.

“No, we don’t.”

“You’ll regret it?—”

“Just shut up and fuck me, Holden.”

Cal lifted her easily, bracing her against the rough-hewn door. Ellie wound her legs around his waist, pulling him closer. He fumbled for a moment before aligning himself with her entrance.

“Ellie,” he murmured, half warning, half plea.

But she was past caring and tilted her hips. He slid into her like he was made just for her, stretching her, filling her until her body clenched around his, and she gasped out his name.

Cal held her there, lodged deep inside her as if he was afraid to move. His atypical stillness made her laugh.

“You’re not going to break me.”

“Fuck.” The word came out on a rough exhale as she rolled her hips. “No, but I’m afraid I’m gonna break me.”

She smirked and rolled her hips against his in response, causing him to groan and bury his face in her neck. He groaned in response, his lips finding hers again in a desperate kiss that sent a shockwave of pleasure through her. His fingers dug into her thighs, his grip almost bruising. She relished it—the raw, primal edge of him. He moved in short, rough strokes, scraping her bare back against the weathered wood.

“You feel so fucking good,” Cal breathed into her ear, punctuating his words with a hard thrust that had her gasping. “I’ll never get enough of you.”

Every nerve ending seemed on fire as he plunged deeper and deeper. She arched into him, her teeth sinking into his shoulder to muffle the moan that tore from her throat. She tightened her legs around him, wanting him as close as possible.

Her world narrowed down to the sensation of being filled and claimed, the rasp of his labored breaths against her ear, the rough wood behind her digging into her skin. She was shaking, her body straining for that inevitable tumble over the edge.

And then his teeth sank into her shoulder, and she shattered. Her cry echoed in the empty cabin, her body spasming around him in waves of pleasure.
