Luke fished in his pocket and pulled out a set of car keys. “Take these with you as well.”

He handed the stack of papers to Jeremiah, who took them begrudgingly and walked off.

Emma watched him go, then turned back to Luke.

“We had a meeting with Principal Kennedy yesterday,” he explained. “As long as he keeps his grades up and helps the history club prep for the National History Bee, he’ll be able to stay in his senior year. So, I’m really hoping this is going to work out this time.”

While Luke spoke, Emma struggled to resist getting lost in his ocean blue eyes. She had told Lisa and her grandfather she wasn’t seeking love, yet being in Luke’s presence made it difficult to remember that.

Emma nodded. “I promise I’ll pay extra attention to him. I can always help with tutoring or extra credit if he needs it too.”

“Well, I better be going before Jeremiah steals the car and drives to Mexico with it,” Luke said with a laugh. “I’ll see you around.”

“Sure. Yeah. See you later,” Emma said, letting out a deep breath she didn’t even know she was holding.

Just as Luke walked out the main doors, Kara and Charlotte entered. When Emma headed over to greet them, she noticed Charlotte seemed a bit glum, possibly still upset about how Jeremiah had acted at the rescue over the past weekend.

“Hey Kara. Hey Charlotte. What’s up?”

Charlotte sighed. “I have summer school. Which is totally unfair.”

“She needs to bring her math grade up a bit,” Kara explained. “So, she’s going to be taking a few classes for extra credit before the fall semester starts.”

“Hey, at least you’ll be stuck here with me,” Emma said, shrugging her shoulders.

Charlotte gave her a half-smile. “I guess not.”

Kara shook her head as Charlotte walked away. “I love her, but she is such a handful sometimes.”

Emma leaned in. “Really? I thought Charlotte was one of those self-sufficient kids.”

“She used to be, but now that she’s getting older and the hormones are raging, things are getting a bit more...dramatic,” Kara explained.

“It’s always dramatic with you two.”

“But it’s not just me anymore. It’s the boys too.”

Emma raised her eyebrows. “Ah, the boys. They’re a handful too.”

“Speaking of boys...will you be hanging out with Luke anytime soon?”

Emma’s cheeks turned tomato red, unable to stop it. She looked down and cleared her throat. “You know, I should probably get to class.”

Kara smirked, deciding not to tease her friend about the new handsome stranger in town. “Well, I won’t keep you. Have fun and I’ll see you soon, okay?”

Emma gave her a hug. “See ya later, Kara. Take care.”

She watched Kara walk down the hall, then turned on her heel and headed in the opposite direction. But as she passed by the front office, Principal Kennedy called out to her.

“Oh, Ms. Wright! Ms. Wright! You are just the person I was looking for.”

As Principal Kennedy approached her, Emma smiled in greeting. “Yes, what can I do for you?”

“Well, it’s what you can do for us, actually,” the principal said. “Do you remember Mrs. Anderson?”

Emma took a moment to remember. “She teaches calculus, right?”

“Yes, she does! You’ve got a good memory. Well, she was expecting at the end of the spring semester, and she’s going to have the baby any day now. The sub we had lined up resigned. So, you’ll be subbing her class full time while she’s out on maternity leave until the end of October.”
