Kara grabbed a spoon from the table and moved the ice cream tub between them. “Well, keeping busy is good. It’s can be a distraction from other things.”

Emma nodded. “Yes, it is. So, what are we gonna watch?”

After scrolling through a couple dozen movies, they finally settled on The Wedding Singer. Emma had forgotten how funny the movie was, and pretty soon she and Kara were laughing uncontrollably. They tore into the tub of ice cream, savoring each bite, feeling its creaminess and the crunchiness of the peanut butter chips mingling in their mouths. The sweetness of the chocolate and the saltiness of the chips were perfectly balanced, making it difficult to stop eating. When Riley realized he wasn’t going to get any ice cream, he got up and skulked over to his dog bed, giving each of them a pleading look.

Emma reached for another spoonful and felt her it hit the bottom with a clink. “We really ate that whole thing, didn’t we?” she said, looking down at the empty tub.

Kara laughed. “It was so good! I’ll throw this away so we can start on the other snacks.”

Emma smirked, shaking her head as Kara walked away. “Do you want me to pause it?”

“No, no, that’s okay!” Kara called out. “I’ll just be a minute!”

Emma settled back on the couch and looked up at the screen. It was the scene where Glenn, Julia’s fiancé, was telling Robbie how he cheats on her frequently and plans to continue after they’re married. Her mind immediately shot to Chad, and how he had strayed during their marriage. She stiffened as she replayed the day she had made the awful realization in her head.

As Kara walked back into the room, she noticed how Emma’s demeanor had changed and looked at the screen. “Maybe we should find a different movie. What do you think?”

Emma nodded awkwardly, trying to keep her emotions in check. “I think that’s a good idea.”

Kara grabbed the remote and went back to the list of movies. “No problem. We’ll find something else. Something that doesn’t have any of that silly love stuff in it. Do you like action movies?”

Emma raised an eyebrow. “Do you?”

Kara shrugged. “Well, possibly, if there’s a good storyline in them. Here we go! How about this one?”

Emma looked up at the screen, relieved, to see a spy thriller movie without a hint of romance. “Sure, that’ll be fine.”

Kara smiled. “Great. I’ve been wanting to see this one for a while now, but Charlotte never wants to watch them with me.”

As the movie started, Emma noticed Kara’s eyes light up every time the gorgeous lead actor appeared on screen. She chuckled.

“What?” Kara looked over at her.

Emma shook her head, unable to contain her laughter. “Nothing. I just see why you wanted to watch this now.”

“Can you blame me?” she said with a sly grin.

Emma smirked before stuffing an Oreo in her mouth. As the movie progressed, her thoughts drifted to how grateful she was for Kara’s friendship that had blossomed after she adopted Riley from her rescue. Since then, they had become fast friends, bonding over their shared passion for animals and spending countless hours together helping strays in the community.

After the movie was over, and as the credits rolled, Kara stretched her arms over her head, letting out a yawn.

“Good movie night. We should do it again soon.”

Emma nodded. “Yes, I agree. That was a lot of fun, Kara. Thank you so much for suggesting it... I didn’t know how much I needed it.”

Kara threw her arms around Emma, pulling her into a hug. “I’m here for you anytime. You know that, right?”

Emma smiled. “I know.”

Kara let go of her and stood up. “I better get home. I’m leaving the rest of the goodies for you, though.”

Emma stood up and walked her over to the door, opening it for her. “Maybe next time we could do it at your place and I’ll bring the snacks.”

Kara stepped outside. “Sounds like a plan.”

“Goodnight Kara. Get home safe.”

Kara waved as she walked over to her car and got inside. Emma watched her friend drive off, then went back into the house.
