I smiled, feeling immense pride that my mate was selected to help Angela. It was the next best thing after wielding the weapon, and he’d finally get the training he needed to manage his scales.

Angela gave Kit a shaky wave and followed Thane and Tundreg to the door, trying not to knock anyone in the head with the staff. Ivan ducked playfully even though she wasn’t even close to hitting him, then grinned at her scowl.

Having Angela wield the weapon might have been a terrible idea.

“Mages are best suited for it, but I can open portals one at a time,” Kit said to Imos and Pietr once the others had left. “They won’t be permanent, but long enough to get your people through.”

Both men tilted their heads down in respect.

“We welcome your assistance,” Imos said.

“Thank you for the generous offer, Ms. Parker. What supplies will you need?” Adam asked.

“None. I gathered them all yesterday for our trip to the Otherworld, just in case.” She patted the backpack slung over her seat. “I’m ready to roll if you have an area prepared.”

Adam’s white wings fluttered behind him as he stood. “Your foresight is a boon to us all. We will open the portals in the hotel we acquired. Come.”

The rest of us pushed our chairs back to follow him out of the conference room.

In the hallway, a reaper pushing a mail cart waited for me. “Ms. Neill, a letter arrived for you.”

I accepted the envelope, eyeing it with a slight frown. “Thanks.”

As the others disappeared down the hallway, Lena and Ivan hung back with me, and the reaper resumed his mail delivery route.

I tore open the seal and took out the paper. My lungs constricted, making it hard to breathe as I read the letter:

My beautiful little bird,

The time for our reunion has finally arrived. I request the pleasure of your company—and yours alone—at the Brickell City Centre’s parking garage. Meet me at noon.

Forgive the inhospitable ambiance, but I’m sure you’ll understand my need for discretion. Trust me when I say you won’t want to miss this meeting. I have something you desperately desire.

Your loyal friend,

X

Only one person signed letters like that—Xavier. The godsdamned Master Vampire who’d tried to enslave me was alive. I knew it.

The paper shook in my hands as my vision blurred. He had to think I was stupid to agree to meet with him alone. And by meet, I meant kill. I had no intention of hearing him out. Whatever he had to say, he could take it to oblivion along with his ashes.

“What’s it say?” Lena asked, leaning over my shoulder to scan the paper. A low growl rose in her throat. “Not happening.”

Ivan raised an eyebrow.

I took a deep breath. “It’s Xavier. I’m not meeting him alone, but I’m definitely going to face him. And this time, I will kill him.”

TUESDAY MORNING

Thane

I countered Angela’s swing with my scythe and stepped back. Sweat dripped down both our faces and soaked into our clothes. “Again.”

After leaving the conference room, she and I had changed into DEA-issued training gear and met Tundreg in the training facility. For the last hour, I’d tested Angela’s ability with the staff while the dragonman explained how to control my scales.

The latter was simple. Where I had been trying to force the dragon scales out of my skin through sheer will, Tundreg had me focusing on sinking into them, surrendering to the change.
