“In the end, you left me no choice,” he said with a sad shake of his head. “You forced me to break the bond between you two and claim you as mine, proving to you once and for all that I am your true mate.”

No more lies, no more caution, no more fucks.

I switched to the offense, bombarding him with everything I had, using every move in the book and several that weren’t. I thrust and swiped—hell, I even bit him.

Nothing was beneath me.

Then I saw it—my opening.

After I struck his forehead with another knife’s hilt, he stumbled, and I kicked. Not at him, but at the sword.

The blade flew from his hands, clattering to the floor and sliding toward Angela.

As he dove for the weapon, I jumped onto his back and drove Lisa deep into his side.

He pitched forward with a grunt. Looking down at the blade piercing him, he laughed.

Only I wasn’t dumb enough to think I’d killed him. I just wanted to distract him. “Angela, now!”

With one eyelid caked shut from drying blood, the witch’s hand closed on the sword’s grip. She raised it in trembling hands, pointing the blade’s tip at Colin. Her expression turned dark and stormy as she harnessed the sword’s magic.

She screamed out her hatred for the fae man, and a flash of black lightning blasted from the sword. I ducked behind Colin, letting him take the brunt of it.

His body shook violently beneath my hands as the magic grabbed on and ripped into him. His skin warmed beneath my hold, and while it didn’t hurt, I didn’t want to get caught in the crossfire. Yanking Lisa free as I rolled away, I crouched a short distance away.

When Angela’s scream died out, she dropped her arms with a sob, and the sword’s magic released him.

Colin fell to his knees, breathing heavily. With a look of horror, he held his hands before his face. Steam rose from his clothes and hair, but he didn’t appear injured. “No, this can’t be possible.”

I glanced at Angela, not sure what she’d done to him. I’d kind of expected him to be dead, and I was even okay not being the one to kill him. She glared at him with her good eye, a fierce stare that clearly said she wanted him dead, too.

The queen’s torso slumped to the ground with a thud, lifeless.

My head jerked back as the realization hit me.

Colin’s magic was gone.

The fae man—or I guess, basically human now—glared at Angela, savage cruelty twisting his once handsome features into that of a monster. “You can’t do this to me.” Staggering to his feet, he leaped for her with his hands outstretched.

Only I got there first.

I dropped Lisa and grabbed him by the throat, using my inhuman strength to lift him to his toes. His eyes watered as he tugged at my hand, but my grip was ironclad. I carried him to the now open window and stepped over the debris to the very edge, glass crunching beneath my boots.

Fierce winds snagged at my clothes and hair. The city lay several hundred feet below us, and this fae fuck didn’t have magic or wings.

A steady thrum beating against the air signaled a winged creature’s arrival right before Adam touched down, avoiding the glass littering the floor. He folded his wings and quickly surveyed the scene, glancing from Angela to Thane to the queen and prince’s bodies, then to Colin and me.

Nathan and Jessa landed next to him, and Jessa rushed inside.

“Ms. Neill, let us take it from here.” Adam’s voice was calm as he looked from me to Colin, whose feet still dangled over nothing but air.

The fae man’s eyes rolled wildly with fear, and he clutched my arm for dear life.

Good.

I wanted him to feel absolute terror before he plummeted to his death. He deserved nothing less.

“Veronica, please. Let me take him,” Adam urged.
