His lips are soft like velvet. For a moment, the sensation of his lips on mine keeps me rooted to the spot, making me forget his wound.

Forget the man chasing me.

Then I remember.

I pull away.

"I'm sorry. I have to go." How else can I help him? Can he stand? "Do you want me to call an ambulance?"

He shakes his head, adamant against the suggestion. "No. I'm fine." He goes to stand. He slips his hand in his pocket, as if retrieving something, but when he pulls it out, there’s nothing there.

“You okay? Here, let me help you up." I offer him an arm. With a groan, he lifts himself from the ground, gives a single stagger, then falls back down.

“Fuck me. I’m out of it.”

“It’s okay,” I say, giving him a moment to gather himself. I really, really don’t want to leave him. Not only because of the state of his health, but due to something that passed between us in that stare, that kiss. I felt something, deep inside. Something beyond flutters.

I felt… safe.

But I’m not. Not at all. I’m in terrible danger.

Time creeps up on me like a dark shadow. Trevor could be moments away, right behind me, ready to pounce. I can feel the hot breath of the panther breathing down the back of my neck.

He’s coming for me.

Please, get up.

I’ve got to get away from here. I can feel Trevor’s eyes on me, staring me down, waiting. The stranger’s hand goes to my shoe, pressing into my foot as he steadies himself.

I offer him my hand. He takes it, pulling himself up to his full height. My bloodied hoodie falls from his chest to the ground.

He's tall, muscular, strong. I stare up at him. My God… the man is truly stunning. The blood… it’s spreading.

No matter how hard I try, I can't hide the desperation, the fear in my voice. "I have to go."

I give him one last look, this gorgeous stranger standing under the streetlight, before turning and running back into the night.

I hear his voice behind me, calling out to me.

"Wait! I don't even know your name."

I don't turn back.

I hope to God I’ve been away from the car long enough for Trevor to have tracked it down, seen I’m nowhere in sight and moved on, or given up looking for me. I need to sit down. Now. I run for what seems like hours, my mind and body numb from exhaustion.

My lips are still tingling from that kiss...

My mind is blank, save for the planes of the handsome stranger’s face and the need to find Bunny.

I feel faint—dizzy, thirsty, and exhausted. I catch a glimpse of red. There she is!

My sweet little Bunny parked right where I left her—in a narrow alleyway in a residential area tucked neatly in a row of parked cars. I look around. There’s no one in sight.

Just need to grab my keys…

My… keys?

I’m patting my pockets, digging through my purse. Lipstick, gum wrapper, receipt. Come on, come on. They have to be here!
