Focus on the intruder.

I stand still and steady my heartbeat. Even straining my enhanced hearing, there are no sounds. Maybe I was just being jumpy and it was like a squirrel on the porch or something. That’s a thing, right?

My shoulders relax at the same time my front door swings open. The whole thing catches me off guard and I throw the athame.

The blade hits the mark directly in the shoulder, embedding itself impressively deep given how long it’s been since I’ve practiced my throwing skills.

Too bad the mark is my new lover.

Nothing Like a Big Mouth

Victor

My mouth hangs agape like a fool.

I can’t really help it though. In my one hundred damned years of life, not once has a woman stabbed me a mere handful of hours after giving her an orgasm.

“Ow!” It doesn’t hurt much, my body working quickly to repair the damage and my nerve endings being far less sensitive than most. I really don’t know why I said ow at all. It was probably shock.

Ginger’s eyes go wide as I shut the door and secure the lock I managed to pick. I would suggest something a bit more durable if it weren’t for the fact that I desperately want her to move in with me. Right now.

Taking a steady breath, I turn back to Ginger and pure dread washes over me when I discover she has crumpled onto the floor and is now weeping.

Rushing to her side, my own frayed nerves cause me to assault her with questions. “What’s wrong? Are you hurt? Is someone here? Did they come after you?”

She slowly turns her head up to face me with the oddest of expressions in place. “Am I hurt? Are you serious? I just stabbed you after you broke into my home when someone else already did that, and you left this morning and I thought you never wanted to see me again and now I know you won’t ever want to see me again and for some reason that makes my heart hurt and I am rambling like a fucking idiot!” Her face starts changing colors and suddenly the blade in my shoulder seems like nothing as I back up a little.

“Why did you break in here? And why did you leave me this morning? Do you not want to see me again? Was I not… was I not any good?” Her emotions are giving me whiplash, but when she pauses, a tiny bit of laughter bubbles out of me.

Her eyes turn into daggers and I swallow loudly. Oh Gods, don’t fucking laugh right now, Victor. Don’t you fucking…

It spills out of me in a loud rush and I watch as Ginger’s shoulders droop. For fuck’s sake the woman thinks I am laughing at the prospect of bedding her again when I am actually a bundle of nerves after everything that just happened and really… I just want her to hold me.

Finally, the laughter dies down and I give in to my need. I rush to her and lay my head against her chest. Closing my eyes I take comfort in the sound of her heartbeat. It doesn’t matter that the sound is echoed in my own body now, hearing it at the source is soothing. She sighs but begins running her fingers through my hair in a rhythmic motion. After a few moments, she finally speaks up.

“You know, we really do need to get that out of your shoulder.”

Moving as little as possible, I reach up and rip the blade out before tossing it away and hearing the thunk as it embeds itself in the yellow daffodil-covered wall. A small amount of blood pools, but the wound closes quickly.

“Well, that's handy I suppose.” She returns her fingers to my hair and I adamantly resist the urge to purr like a kitten. “Although, I really didn’t mean to hurt you in the first place. But I was trying to hurt the person intruding, so I guess I did mean it?”

I chuckle softly. “Ginger, that is the worst apology I have ever heard.”

She does fall into a fit of laughter at that, and I watch the joy in her face. Awed by her beauty. After a little while, she relaxes and returns to her questioning. “Why are you here though, Victor? I didn’t think you were interested in more than last night when you were missing this morning. And really, I don’t know why you are cuddling with me when I just stabbed you. I would have broken up with me right there. Maybe.”

As she continues running her fingers through my hair—seriously I would give anything for her to never stop doing that—my mouth loosens and gives her the answers to her questions.

“I went down to make us breakfast, but I discovered my staff had been abducted. I got this card instructing me to meet someone. I did and was detained for a little while. After that, I came right here to check on you. And I can’t break up with you after claiming you as my mate, love.”

Her hand goes still and it hits me that my mouth may have been a bit looser than I had realized. She doesn’t move, or breathe. I think the birds outside may have stopped chirping as well.

The whole situation was sort of freaking me out a little. As a vampire thinking that, it says a lot.

She opens her mouth and I brace for it. The rejection. I know it’s coming. It’s far too late and it will be tough watching her learn that, but it’s my own fault for giving in to her demands last night, and then blurting it out today.

What a way to treat a gift. I never expected to find my fated mate. Not all paras do. But I did and now I am fucking it up left and right. I swear I am going to have to spend the rest of our lives making this up to her.

Her voice is like ice and I find myself actively swallowing a whimper. This woman has no clue about the amount of power she possesses.
