Make a pile of all the books about magic, spells, dragons, dragon shifters and—

“Shane.”

“Please.”

Her voice broke and that broke me.

I froze, my back to her. My chest hurt and something stung behind my eyes.

This couldn’t be happening.

Inhaling deeply, I turned to her. Her eyes reflected mine—pure agony and tears brimming in them.

She extended her hand to me and at that moment I felt like a jerk. Here I was, raging about my own feelings when she was hurting as much, if not more than me.

I stepped to her side and took her hand in mine. “You’ll be fine. You have to be fine. We’ll find a cure, a spell, something to fix this, and—”

“Shane,” she whispered. “I appreciate that, and I’ll do what I can too, but Almae is right. There’s no guarantees. You should prepare.” A sob racked her chest. “By the moon, we have to tell Minsi and Tyren. Prepare them too.”

I shook my head. “No. We don’t need to fucking prepare. You’re not going anywhere.”

She offered me a sad smile and a tear rolled down her cheek. “I don’t think Thea and Almae would joke about this. If they said my chances are minimal, we should believe them.”

“They never said that.”

“It was implied.”

“Raika, I can’t.” I brought our joined hands up to my mouth, pressed a kiss to the top of hers. “I know I keep repeating this, but I lost you twice already. I won’t survive a third time. I don’t want to.”

“You have to. For Minsi and Tyren, and the pack.”

“I don’t care about the pack!” I almost shouted.

“Then think about your brother and sister. They need you. They will need you for a long time. You need to be strong and hang on and stay here for them.”

I leaned forward, resting my forehead on hers. Her skin was hot, hotter than it had been yesterday. “I can’t lose you.”

“You won’t.” Another tear rolled down. I reached up, cupped her beautiful face, and wiped the tear away with my thumb. l always be with you, even after I’m gone.”

“Don’t say that,” I snarled.

I pulled back, afraid to kiss her or touch her and ignite the dragon’s magic again. But I couldn’t let go of her completely, so I held her hand in both of mine.

“I’m fine now.” She wiped another tear before it fell. “Let’s enjoy the moments we have together.”

Easier said than done. I wouldn’t accept this. Fate hadn’t made me want her for all of my life just to take her from me like this. We had to have a happily ever after. I would make sure of it.

My breath caught. “I promise you, I’ll find a way to save you.”

“You can’t promise that.”

“Yes, I can. I will find a way,” I repeated, hoping the moon heard me and sent me a solution.

But even without the moon, I wouldn’t give up.

I wasn’t going to lose Raika.
