Shit. I sat back down. Maybe it was for the best if I gave Shane a few minutes. He needed to clear his head and let go of his anger before we were able to talk.

Meredith came to the bed’s side, beginning her examination. She told me to relax while she listened for my heart and breathing. She checked my temperature: higher than was normal for a wolf, and we already ran higher than humans, but not overly so.

“The dragon’s magic seems to be quiet,” she said. “For now.”

That wasn’t reassuring. Then again, I knew it wasn’t supposed to be. Vampires weren’t known for their gentle nature. Meredith would tell me how it was without any sugarcoating.

“Thea said that if I start losing control, you can do something about it,” I said. “What is it?”

One corner of her lips tugged up. “I’ll tell you some other time.” She patted my leg and walked away.

I looked out the window. The sun was already descending, though since it was almost summer, we still had a few of hours of sunlight.

I reconsidered going after Shane, but I thought of the village and our wolves. There was a reason I was being kept here—so I didn’t hurt anyone if I lost control. I couldn’t go after Shane and end up hurting others. Especially because something told me we would argue more before making up, and if I got angry, who knew what could happen?

I stayed put, bored out of my mind. I laid my back on the pillows propped up on the bed, picked up my phone, and started browsing books. I wasn’t in the mood to read, but I could see the new releases of this past month and choose what I would like to read.

Footsteps approached and a moment later, Thea, Almae, and Lavinia walked in.

Thea lifted her hand, showing me the rectangular box she was holding. “Here it is.” She walked to the bed, put the box over the side table, and picked up one of many vials inside. “

“We used the flower from the mountain,” Lavinia announced, sounding a little too eager. “Don’t worry, it seems totally safe, and it has a calming effect, which is perfect for this.”

Thea nodded, handing me the vial. “It should help stabilize the dragon magic.”

I took it and turned it around in my hand, the yellow liquid shining almost golden. “What happens when we train? Won’t this make it harder for me to access the magic?”

“This elixir won’t last long.” Almae gestured to the box. “That’s why there are so many. You should drink one every four to six hours, depending on how you’re feeling and your emotions.”

I frowned. “So the idea is to schedule training between doses?”

Thea nodded. “Exactly.”

“You should drink it,” Lavinia urged me.

I uncorked the vial and an acrid scent reached my nose. “Any side effects I should know about?”

“We did everything we could so there wouldn't be any,” Almae said. That was good. If only every medicine out there was like that.

I held my breath and downed the elixir. A burning sensation traveled down my throat and I hissed.

“Here.” Lavinia picked up the glass of water from the side table, offering it to me.

I drank two big gulps and sighed.

The three witches watched me carefully, making me feel like I was under a microscope.

“Feel anything?” Thea asked.

I frowned. “No—” I gasped as my insides relaxed on their own accord. It was like a balm had descended upon the dragon’s magic, calming it, and I could breathe again. “I think it’s working.”

Meredith stepped forward and took my temperature. “It’s lower.”

Almae smiled. “That’s a good sign.”

“But remember, it won’t last long,” Thea reminded me. “If we made it stronger, it might have upset your stomach or worse. Follow the directions, or whenever you feel like you’re losing it.”

I nodded, realizing I had drunk one. “So, no training for now.”
