“Miss me already?” he says when he answers.

I choke back a sob. “Rogue.”

“What’s wrong? Skye, are you okay?”

I take a deep breath. “I’m fine, I’m sorry.”

“You don’t sound fine. Are you in your car? I hear an engine. Why aren’t you at work?”

The concern in his voice causes my heart to swell.

“I’m on my way to Mountain Springs.”

“Mountain Springs?” he repeats.

“My grandma is at the Guardian Springs Nursing Home.”

“She okay?”

“She has pneumonia and is asking for me.”

“I’ll meet you there.”

“No… no, thank you, but I’ll be okay. The nurse said they’re treating her with antibiotics. Grandma is asking for me. I’m sorry I left work, but I need to see her. She’s the only family I have left, Rogue.”

“I understand, family first. Be careful. Text me when you get there.”

“I will.”

I pray that she’s okay as I speed out of town. Grandma is the last connection I have to my parents, and I’m not ready to lose her yet.

Hang on Grandma, I’m coming.

CHAPTER 30

ROGUE

“Everything okay?”

I shove my cell back into my cut and stare at Grim. When I remain silent, he lifts his hands again and repeats his questions.

Shaking my head, I reply. “No. Skye’s grandma has pneumonia.”

“Isn’t she in a nursing home?” I nod, and Grim continues. “Then I’m sure she’s getting very good care.”

“Yeah, probably. She’s at Guardian Springs, and we’ve always heard good things about them. That’s the one nursing home in the area not employing corrupt assholes.”

Grim smiles, and it changes his entire demeanor. Not many people get to see this side of him, and I’m glad I’m one of the lucky ones.

“If you’re worried, why don’t you meet Skye there?” he suggests.

“I couldn’t.”

“Why? She’s your woman, and she needs you. That means you go.”

“If she wanted me there, she’d have asked me to meet her,” I insist.

“If you’re gonna make this thing with Skye permanent, you’ve got a lot to learn.”
