“You’re lying,” Sasha says, narrowing her eyes.

“Your plans include using our mother,” Shayna adds.

I close my eyes in frustration. The last thing I want is for Maxim to figure out the girls have powers, just like I do.

Maxim stares at the girls before breaking into a smile. “You inherited gifts from her? I heard you had. Interesting.”

He’s interrupted by Hex’s ringtone. That’s when I see my phone in his hand. Maxim swipes across the screen to answer the call.

“Well, I was wondering how long it would take you to call your mother. Have to tell you I’m disappointed in you, son. Thought your mama meant more to you.”

“Who the fuck is this?” I hear Hex shouting on the other end. “Where’s Delphine?”

“She’s safe. For now. I should just kill the bitch, but I thought we could have a family reunion first.”

“If you hurt her, I’ll gut you,” Hex snarls.

“Now, is that anyway to talk to your father?”

CHAPTER THREE: DIXIE

Hex and I share the same look. His dad? Neither of us knows much about the man who sired our President. Delphine refuses to talk about him and, from what little she’s said, had me believing he’s dead. The confused look on Hex’s face says he thought so, too. He gestures for us to go into his office, while signaling Pirate to start a search.

“Don’t know who you are, but you’re not my father,” Hex says as he closes us into his office. “Now, let me speak with Delphine.”

“Did she tell you I was dead?” the voice on the other end asks. “She wishes I was dead. But I’m not. She’s a lying whore and always has been. I can prove it. Not only did she lie to you about me, but did she tell you about your twin brother?”

I see the shock cross over Hex’s face and know he’s at a loss for words. As he processes the information, I take over the conversation.

“What the fuck do you want?” I demand. I hear Delphine whimper at the sound of my voice, and the sound almost breaks me.

“Who are you?”

“Dixie, I’m Hex’s VP. Now start talking. What do you want? You took Delphine for a reason. So quit fucking around and get to your demands.”

“Careful. Dixie, is it? Or Delphine will pay the price for your insolence. As for what I want from you? I can’t speak about it over the phone, only in person. Meet me, and I’ll explain what you need to do to get Delphine back. I’ll give you one hour to get to Cafe du Monde on Poydros. Clock’s ticking.”

Hex and I jump up and rush into Pirate’s lair to get his update and let him know where we’re heading. No way is Hex going without me.

“Anything?”

“I almost had it, but he ended the call before I could pinpoint the location of Delphine’s cell phone. I’ve narrowed it down to the warehouse district,” Pirate says, his frustration clear in his tone.

“Makes sense. He wants to get to the meet before us.”

“Zip can get there before you,” Pirate suggests. “He was on his way downtown.”

I call Zip and give him instructions to get to the cafe as fast as he can, but to leave his kutte off when he gets there. I end the call when I see the video feed from Delphine’s apartment. We knew the bastard captured Delphine, but seeing his goons grab Sasha and Shayna has Hex ready to punch his hand through a wall.

“We’re getting all three of them back,” I assure Hex. “Any luck on identifying who the fucker is?” I ask Pirate.

“No. I checked Hex’s birth certificate, but Delphine listed the father as unknown. However, I found a second birth certificate under Delphine’s name. She had a second son born sixteen minutes prior.”

Hex curses, and I know he’s furious with Delphine. Thirty-two years and not once has she mentioned Hex’s twin. I feel a need to defend Delphine. “She has her reasons,” I tell him, even though I can’t think of what they could be. Hex nods slowly, but I’m not sure if he agrees with me.

“Let’s go talk to this bastard and get her back so I can ask,” Hex finally says, getting up and heading toward the door. He stops before he reaches it and turns back to Pirate. “Tell the prospects to go to Delphine’s house and pack her shit up. I want her living here at the clubhouse.”

I open my mouth to argue, because I know Delphine will flip when she finds out what he’s done. But I can’t honestly say that I’m not personally grateful he’s making that call. Delphine is too vulnerable in that apartment, as we’ve discovered. “What about Sasha and Shayna?”
