Terri grabbed linen napkins that had been stored in a side compartment and pointed at me. “Don’t try anything else. I didn’t tell Jareth you’d be returned to him without bruises and if you keep this up, you might not see him again after all.”

His smile was deranged, and his eyes glittered dangerously. How had Jareth and I never picked up on how truly awful he was?

For the first time, I was grateful Jareth had used my phone to follow me. It was likely going to be what got me out of this mess.

I looked out the window for a second, observing my location. We were currently in the parking lot of a huge warehouse on the edge of the Providence city limits. They hadn’t blindfolded me. I filed away that we were basically alone, so if I found a way to escape, I’d have to rely on myself.

Traitor Terri, as though reading my mind, holds my phone up to my face to unlock it, taps the screen a few times, and then powers it down. Then he handed the phone to Tony. “Destroy it.”

“Done.” Tony took it and stepped out of the car.

“Get out.” Terri’s fingers dug into my arm, and he yanked me out of the car.

I didn’t give him the satisfaction of yelling out even though it felt like my arm might rip out its socket. Honestly, I’d have gotten out without his help if he’d just asked, but he was being a jerk.

“Let’s go. Once we’re inside, I’ll wait another ten minutes before sending a text with our location to Jareth to give us more time. Tony, you hide. I’ve got my own men on their way. Jareth’s sneaky. I’m sure he won’t come through the front door, but I can be fairly certain he’ll come alone. It’s how he operates. His inability to trust anyone else will be to our advantage. Too bad he didn’t figure it out with you though.”

“Do you want me to dispose of whoever he brings if he doesn’t show up alone?”

I sucked in a breath. “How can you two nonchalantly discuss killing someone?”

Terri laughed, a slightly maniacal sound. “You think Jareth hasn’t had to hide a body?”

I’d always suspected, but this was my confirmation. People changed though. Jareth wasn’t the same man he was ten years before or even six months ago. I loved the man he was today. And knowing him as well as I did whoever’s life he ended was likely a very bad person.

Terri grabbed my arm and shoved me in front of him. “Walk. And don’t try to get away. I can still shoot your leg and keep you alive.”

He was so convinced I’d be too afraid to run he hadn’t even tied my hands. He must’ve thought I wasn’t a threat. Well, I’d show him when I got the chance. We made our way across the parking lot and into a large warehouse. Boxes were stacked high and packed tight throughout the building.

It seemed so normal. Which was probably a weird thing to notice.

I must have slowed down too much because Terri shoved a hand between my shoulder blades to force me forward. I pursed my lips, holding back what I really wanted to say. Eventually, we made our way into a small office in the farthest reaches of the warehouse.

Terri shoved me into a nearby chair and tied up my hands. I was grateful when he didn’t also tie my feet. At least if I needed to run I could.

As discreetly as I could I took stock of the room. There were no windows, so I couldn’t try to escape that way and the only other furniture was the desk, another chair, and a filing cabinet.

“Check the outside cameras,” Terri instructed Tony.

Jareth’s former bodyguard left the room while Terri stood by the door, keeping his gaze on me.

“How did you get Tony to turn?” I asked.

He shrugged. “I’ve got something on him that trumps his work for Jareth.”

“It’s not too late to let me go.”

Terri’s loud, boisterous laugh echoed in the small space.

“I’m sure you have more important things to do than babysit me. Maybe you should have one of your guys do it.” Maybe it was ridiculous to think I might be able to help, but if I could find out if Terri’s other guys had arrived and how many, it might help Jareth when he got here.

“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re doing. Just shut up,” he barked out in a gruff voice.

Crap on a cracker. I wasn’t as subtle as I thought.

This whole setup didn’t seem very well planned.

Did they really think they’d win against Jareth if it was only the two of them against him?
