“In the middle of something private.” Her blush deepened, and I wondered what she could be thinking about. I was tempted to ask, but she was embarrassed enough already.

“Then I’d close the door.”

“I see.”

“But you don’t need to worry. I’ve never done anything that private in here.”

Her eyes widened, and she sucked in a deep breath, and even though she was wearing her suit, with the jacket still done up, I noticed the way her breasts heaved. It made my cock ache, and I regretted my decision to tease her.

She smiled then, depositing the file she was carrying on my desk before she left. I wondered if I’d gone too far, and part of me wanted to follow her out, to ask. Except we weren’t on those kind of terms.

We’re still not. Not yet.

I hope we will be, though. Very soon. And even where we are now is better than where we’ve come from…

The month I spent waiting for her to start working here was torture. It was also the longest month of my life. I counted every hour of every day, doubting my sanity for employing someone I’d fallen for, but wanting her so much, it hurt. The time dragged, and I only got through it by keeping busy. As well as all my normal activities, I made a point of dealing with everything related to Livia’s employment, including selecting her phone and car. The phone was easy; I just got her exactly the same one as mine.

As for the car, I checked what employees on her pay-grade are normally allocated and discovered the make and model varies.

“It’s dictated by price,” Miles said when I asked the question. “We go wherever we can get the best deal.”

“I see. Can you send me the details of what we can get for Miss Hopkins?”

“Why don’t I just order the car?”

“Because I’m asking you to send me the details.”

I could tell he was confused, but I wasn’t in the mood to offer an explanation, and about an hour later, an email landed in my inbox containing a list of cars, all of which were perfectly adequate and perfectly dull.

I wanted something more than that for Livia, and after a couple of minutes’ thought, I picked up the phone…

It took three weeks for the car to be delivered, and when it was, news traveled fast.

“A Mercedes? You’ve got her a fucking Mercedes?” Miles said, walking right into my office and up to my desk, staring down at me. It’s one thing for Livia – or Doreen in her time – not to knock, but I object to anyone else doing it. Especially Miles.

“Good morning, Miles. Do come in.” I couldn’t contain my sarcasm and didn’t bother trying.

“You realize her car cost more than mine, don’t you?”

“And?” I said, putting down my pen as I sat back in my chair.

“There’s a hierarchy. I’m a department head. Livia Hopkins is going to be your PA.”

“I’m aware of that.”

“Then why did you get her a car that’s more than thirty thousand dollars over the allocated budget?”

I stood, towering above him, although he didn’t flinch, which was annoying. “Go speak to the Finance Department. They’ll tell you the car is on budget.”

He narrowed his eyes. “You can’t be serious,” he said. “Are you telling me you got a Mercedes for twenty-five thousand dollars? Because if you are—”

“I’m sorry, Miles, but you’ll have to leave.” Doreen’s voice cut him off mid-sentence and we both turned to see her standing in the doorway. “I’m afraid Hunter has an appointment in ten minutes, and he can’t be late.”

Like everyone else in the building, Miles knew better than to argue with Doreen and, although I could tell he had more to say, he backed out of my office. Doreen stepped aside to let him leave and then came further into the room.

“I don’t have an appointment, do I?” I looked over at Doreen once he’d gone.

“No. But I can tell when you’re about to lose it, and it sounded like you were getting there.”
