She took two small steps forward and put her hand into mine. The moment her fingers slid against my palm, I yanked her onto my chest and wrapped my arms around her.

She burst into a fit of laughter as Valor and Ezra sprawled on either side of us and threw the covers over our bodies.

As she settled, her fingers traced the path of my tattoo, swirling along the covered scars.

“I never noticed the scars before,” she said lowly.

“They were a gift from the old Alpha,” I replied.

There was a time I couldn’t speak of them, but I had made peace with what I had done for him long ago.

“What did you do to earn this?” Brielle asked.

Valor’s arm wound around us, a silent support.

“I interrogated shifters and got him the information he wanted through any means necessary. And when I couldn’t do it anymore, I fought back and earned this.” I gestured to my chest.

“So, you covered it with a tattoo?”

“I had a packmate trace the lines as a reminder of the line I walk. As a healer, it’s easier to break something than it is to put it back together.”

She was silent for a moment before snuggling into my chest.

I gazed at her beautiful face. “How does this feel?”

Contentment and peace echoed through our bond as her eyes searched mine, but a shadow lingered beneath.

What was she afraid of?

A tiny smile curled her lips as her expression shuttered. “Warm.”

Chapter 13

Brielle

The scents of my mates eased me out of sleep even as guilt threatened to strangle me. Seven days. That was how long we had spent in our den. Now, my heat was over, and all my previous worries returned.

We were bonded. How would I ever escape and find Blythe?

My wolf yawned contentedly, uninterested in my warring emotions. We were with our mates, and nothing else mattered to her. She believed the rest would fall into place, but I wasn’t so sure.

I slid out of bed, padded to the bathroom, and found a brand-new toothbrush on the counter.

They are thoughtful. I’ll give them that.

Our mates want us to be happy. If we told them about Blythe, they would help us, my wolf said.

They want a mate, not family issues.

They want to make us happy. If finding our sister will do so, they’ll do it, she argued.

I doubted they would take too kindly to the group of rebels my father was planning to deliver me and Blythe to when the Council captured me.

Oh, sure, I’ll just walk up to them and say, “Hey, guys. I know this is just the beginning of our mating and all, but I have a sister hiding with a group of rebels.” That would go over really well.

“Brielle, I forgot to mention—”

Startled, I turned toward Ezra and dropped my toothbrush in the sink. I fumbled to pick it up.
