I knew promising the rebels a place of refuge was the right call, and I was sure Alpha Wynn would honor the conditions. Our Alpha would risk everything to make things right. He’d proven himself a leader when his father was alive and continued to do so with the Omegas. With Andy’s information about the mixed breeds and the Council’s motives, we could fortify our defenses against the Council.

As we crossed into pack territory, Blythe’s muscles coiled tighter. It was understandable. No matter what we told her, pack life would be an adjustment. I wasn’t entirely certain the rebels had much of a system in place, though they all seemed to defer to Andy.

Valor glanced over his shoulder. “Don’t worry, B. We’ve got you. I promise the reality is much better than whatever you’re thinking.”

She blew out a breath. “I know. I don’t think my sister would bring me somewhere unsafe, but my wolf won’t stop pacing. She’s grumpy, and it takes her a while to warm up to new people. It’s giving me the skeeves.”

My lips quirked. I’d only known Blythe for a day or so, but it was easy to pinpoint the differences between her and her sister. Where Brielle was reserved and tended to hide her inner thoughts, Blythe told people exactly what she was thinking. It was an endearing trait.

It also told me the rebels did an admirable job of making her feel safe enough to express herself.

“We’ll take it slow with the introductions,” Korren said. “We’ll let you get used to our den today, and if you’re up to it, we’ll take a walk around the territory. How does that sound?”

Blythe was glued to the window, her eyes wide as she took in the rolling greenery. “Great, Kor.”

We passed the security checkpoint and asked the Enforcers on duty to send a message to the Alpha. Urgency nipped at our heels. The sooner the Alpha had all the details, the sooner we could make a plan and keep Blythe safe.

My family was expanding in the blink of an eye, and something fierce squeezed my chest.

I hadn’t realized how much I wanted one until that very moment.

We took Brielle and Bryn straight to our den. Blythe would have a few hours to get comfortable before we brought her to the Alpha.

“We’re going to meet with Alpha Wynn,” I told Brielle. “If you need us, just contact us on the comms unit.”

“Will do.” Noticing my hesitance to leave, Brielle kissed my jaw. “We’re fine. Now go before you change your mind.”

I would if I stayed much longer. For that reason alone, I turned and walked out the door, reminding myself that we were back on pack land. She was safe.

Valor, Korren, and I would go to any lengths to keep Blythe hidden from the Council. She wasn’t just Brielle’s sister—she was ours now, too.

We sped up as we approached the Alpha’s house. The truth Andy had revealed clung to my tongue, knocking against the back of my teeth, eager to escape. A strange sense of foreboding raised my wolf’s hackles.

Something isn’t right, he said.

“Do you smell that?” Valor murmured. “The Alpha isn’t alone.”

Before he could elaborate, the door swung open. I looked past our Alpha, and my eyes collided with Councilman Raza’s cold, reptilian gaze. He sat on the sofa, and a younger councilman—one I’d never seen before—stood beside him. The newcomer wore his shockingly white hair short, but his green eyes were just as calculating as Raza’s.

He was going to be a problem.

I tugged on the bond, and the others responded in kind. We agreed that our priority would be keeping these two as far away from Blythe as possible.

“Ezra, Valor, Korren. I’m glad you’re back from your trip,” Alpha Wynn said. “Councilman Raza just requested your presence.”

“How fortunate we could make it in time,” I replied flatly.

The Alpha led us into his den. Bishop sat in the far corner of the living room, keeping his eyes trained on Councilman Raza.

We exchanged greetings, then lapsed into silence, waiting for them to reveal the reason for their visit.

“We weren’t aware you’d planned to stop by,” Korren said neutrally.

A slow smile stretched across Councilman Raza’s face. “We wanted to surprise Brielle. After her nine-month stay at the facility, four weeks without her seems like an eternity. Where is my favorite girl?”
