“Not with a hair on your pretty head, but I need you, so you’re going.”

I caught his eye, scoping me out, and his lip lifted to one side. He had fun with me.

“What’s it about?”

“At this point, you don’t need to know. Make sure to smile and nod along when everyone is talking. You don’t need any input or further knowledge.”

Rolling my eyes, I stepped through the door Abel had held open, and he escorted me to my room.

“Want to come in?”

Abel hovered over me, rested his hand on the door frame above my head, and leaned down. I lifted my gaze to connect with his, my heart pounded, and my toes curled as his stance was extremely hot and had me getting worked up. He dropped his mouth and kissed me without warning, but this wasn’t ravenous. It was lazy and sweet. I wanted more, and when he stepped back, I pouted.

“Later. I have to get to the field. I’ll see you at the game.”

I nodded sadly.

“Good. I’ll have one of my brothers meet you out front.”

“No. It’s not necessary. It’s a short walk to the field.”

“It’s a short walk to the dining hall, yet you still almost got hit by a fucking car.”

Sighing, I fell against the door frame and stared at Abel. “Do you really think another freak accident will happen again today? I mean, seriously. I’ll be fine. I’m going to study, then go to your game, watch you play, and then you’ll be with me probably for the rest of the night like usual. I’ll be fine.”

Abel rolled his tongue around in his mouth as he thought everything over. I laid my hands on his chest and rubbed. “Please, Abel. I’ll be fine. I don’t need a guard. I’m good.”

“If one more thing happens, there’s no arguing. You’ll do what I say and accept anything I deem necessary for your safety. Got it?”

“That’s a bit excessive, don’t you think?”

“No.” He glared. “Not when it comes to you being okay, it sure the fuck isn’t. If you disagree, I’ll have one of my brothers waiting for you downstairs.” The infamous Abel smirk shined on me. Time to pick my fights. He’d win this one if I tried to push back. Right now, I didn’t have the umph to want to get into it with him. There were more battles to fight in the future. With Abel’s personality, it was inevitable.

“Fine.”

“Good girl.” He stooped and kissed me softly but didn’t let it go anywhere. “Lock the door, and I’ll see you at the game.”

The rest of the morning, I studied and was pleased to get all my homework done for the week and got ahead on reading for two of my classes. Those uninterrupted few hours allowed me to get involved in my work. Now, I wouldn’t be too far behind if anything surprising came about.

After showering, I got ready for the game and wore the skirt and sweater that drove Abel a little crazy. I couldn’t believe he wanted me to wear this outfit when it appeared to turn him on so much. Shouldn’t he be focusing on the game?

A thrill pulsed through my body. Abel, unable to focus on anything else but me, had a lot of power in that, and I loved the taste of it.

The clock buzzed with the alarm I set to ensure I left my room at the right time to get a good seat to watch the game, specifically Abel, and for him to eye me. He had to know I wore the outfit for him, after all.

Keys and bag in hand, I opened the door to find Blake with his hand up to knock, and he had Chinese takeout in the other.

“Oh, hey, perfect timing. I wondered if you wanted to hang out this afternoon. I brought all your favorites.” He lifted the bag with an innocent smile I didn’t believe for a second, and it had my stomach twisting.

“Uh, sorry, but I already have plans. I’m heading out.”

“Right. I should’ve called first. Mind if I join you?”

Not wanting him to, I didn’t know what to say. If Abel caught Blake with me, he’d be furious, and to be fair, I didn’t want to be around Blake right now, not after what happened last night.

With my hesitation, I didn’t miss how Blake’s eyes raked over my body and a pit hardened in my stomach.

“I’m going to Abel’s game.” I assumed he wouldn’t be interested once he knew where I was headed and would leave me alone. What a misconception that turned out to be.
