“No.”

Abel lifted a charred matchbook in his hand and showed it to me.

“I have no clue where that came from.”

Chapter 12

Abel

Chan and I argued about her coming to stay with me. My girl was stubborn as a mule. Her argument was that the room wasn’t severely destroyed, and I snuffed out the fire in time. After the close call, I didn’t leave her last night, and we slept in Kailey’s old room while I contacted a few people to fix her room. Once I concluded the call, I called around and got some recommendations for a reliable and discreet PI who specialized in handling things for the rich and didn’t mind getting his hands dirty. I wasn’t playing around and gave him a twenty-thousand-dollar retainer, so he knew I meant business and needed answers.

Everything had been disclosed to him. I told him about the fire, car, gargoyle, and Kaylie being drugged because I had a hunch it was meant for Chan. I didn’t believe in coincidences. With all the near attempts, the timing worked out.

“My girl also had a couple of incidents at the beginning of September. Her name and number were graffitied on the outside wall of one of the buildings of her classes, and she was flocked as well outside of her dorm. They might be connected.”

“Of course, Mr. Hartford, there seem to be many incidents occurring. I’ll get to the bottom of this for you.”

“Good. I need answers soon. My girl’s in danger, and I need her protected.”

“I understand. I noted everything you said, and I’ll start digging. I’ll call you when I come across something.”

Telling him I wanted regular check-ins, I hung up and thought over everything Chan had been through, and I wanted to wrap my hands around whoever’s neck I needed to and make it all go away.

Everything had been a whirlwind, and I sat alone in peace for a moment, a rarity these days. I thought about what she said to Blake last night and swore my heart grew several sizes larger. To hear her defend me and admit how she wanted me and only me was what I needed. I didn’t know I wanted to hear her say it until that moment.

Satisfying her and making it impossible for her to leave me had me focused. I didn’t know how to accept the idea of her willingly staying and choosing me out of love, but I took it.

For years, I demanded people to accept me and didn’t give up without a fight. My father showed me that, but to have a woman as sweet and remarkable as Chan want me and need me without needing anything else was fucking heady. We should’ve discussed it last night, but I needed to process it first. When it came to emotions, I didn’t know how to act or what to do. So with her, I did what I always did with everything else in my life. I took her and forced her to want me, never realizing she wanted me all on her own.

Shaking my head, I brought myself out of my little think tank and went out to help the frat brothers finish getting things ready for the Halloween events tonight. I also had some special requests to ask for. Blake needed to be taught a lesson. He had to learn to stay away from my girl.

Dressing up in my costume, I packed the armor and fake guns, except for the real one at my back. We had a society meeting before I took Chan to the haunted maze, and instructions were to carry if we wanted to. It was a strange note, but it didn’t concern me. I didn’t want to disappoint any of the members, so I packed it on.

I looked at myself and had to admit I looked good. I wore a costly tailor-made swat-style law enforcement outfit. It was even plated, which made the costume look more authentic. I didn’t care what people thought about how I looked, which I knew made me privileged, but I wanted Chan to like what she saw and she didn’t seem disappointed yet. I wonder what she’d think of this get-up. Maybe later with the plans I had for her, hopefully, she’d let me tie her up with the handcuffs I sported. Having her at my whim to touch, lick, suck, and torture her with pleasure, had me all in.

My cell buzzed on my dresser, and Chan’s name popped up with a text.

Chan: Kailey dragged me to the sorority to get ready together. I’ll be here.

It wasn’t time to pick her up yet, but I didn’t want to be late for the society meeting, so I decided to pick her up sooner.

Me: You ready now? I’ll come get you.

Chan: Give me ten more minutes, and then I should be ready.

Me: See you soon, babe.

Chan: *kiss kiss*

Downstairs, I looked at everybody’s costumes, and everybody looked legit. Halloween parties and costumes were big with Greek row. People spent a lot of money around here to out costume each other. The judges had their work cut out for them this year.

In the kitchen, a couple of the guys had some drinks, and I confirmed we were still good to go to grab Blake later and pay him a little lesson. Done with the ass hat, the days of holding myself back had ended. Thankfully, the guys were on my side and didn’t trust Blake. Evan even mentioned something shady about him and hated how he hung around Chan. Another reason I liked the guy was because he lived nothing like the privileged elite, who came from billions of dollars. It must be the Southern gentleman thing, but I witnessed some shadows in his gaze. It had to have come from being raised in the society, not hard-earned like mine.

Time to get Chan, I walked over, thankful I didn’t have as far to go. I impatiently waited to look her over in the costume I picked out for her.

Running up the steps, I knocked on the door, and a soft throat clearing had me swiveling to the side of the house where Chan appeared from the backyard path. My jaw dropped, my dick twitched, and I about came in my pants. She was fucking hotter than I ever imagined.
