“Well, fuck. You’re looking into Blake Barclay, right? I’d bet everything on him.”

“I’m looking into him too. Watch her back, and make sure to watch yours.”

The PI had no idea what I prepared for, but Chan being a sitting duck wasn’t something I’d tolerate. I had to get her out of here. The PI agreed to call me with some daily updates, even if there was nothing, but I paid him a shit load. The least he could do was keep me informed.

After I hung up with him, I called Mr. Barclay and told him what I found out. He may have been an invalid at the moment, but the man clearly loved his daughter, and with his money and connections, he’d do anything to keep her safe like me.

I’d fucking kill Blake the first chance I got. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind it was him behind it all. With her death, he had too much to lose and so much to gain. I hoped Mr. Barclay wasn’t blinded by the fact. He had to know something was off with his boy.

Chapter 21

Chantilla

“Baby, come on, wake up.” Abel kissed along my ear and neck. “Come on, babe, wake up.”

Groaning, I pushed at him and turned over, making him chuckle, but it didn’t stop him from trying to wake me. Which sucked by the way. He lay over me and kissed everywhere his mouth touched.

“Abel, let me sleep, it’s Saturday. I’m tired.”

“I’m sorry, baby, but I can’t do that. I need to talk to you.”

The serious tone in his voice had my eyes snapping open, and I moved awkwardly to face him because his weight still lay on top of me.

“What’s going on?”

“I need you to pack, and we need to get away from campus for a while.”

With the morning grogginess, I didn’t expect him to say we needed to leave. “What are you talking about?”

Abel sighed and moved to the side where he sat more on the bed, and I pushed myself against the headboard, fully awake now.

“After Ella told me all about your incidents,” Abel lowered his head and gave me the stink eye, still butt-hurt over finding out about it from Ella and not myself, “I hired a PI.”

“Why’d you do that?”

“Because I need you safe and everything to be checked out, and I’m glad I did. There’s evidence showing somebody’s trying to kill you.”

Once the words left his mouth, I froze. He couldn’t be serious, but he had his angry ‘I’m going to burn the world down’ look.

“You sure?”

“Babe, I wouldn’t have brought this to you if I had any doubts, but there were too many coincidences, and I don’t believe in coincidences. Somebody’s trying to kill you.”

The crazy part about listening to him was how calm I remained. It wasn’t every day a person learned they were thwarting attacks, but with everything else in my life, it made me think, ‘Add it to the list.’ Then a memory hit me like the truck that tried to.

“Oh my God.”

“What?”

“The day I came from the hospital after my mom. I drove Ella’s car, and this big navy truck almost ran me off the road. It scared the crap out of me, and when I got control of the car, the truck disappeared.”

Abel closed his eyes and took a deep breath, and it looked like he counted in his head. “Why didn’t you tell me about this sooner?”

Sheepishly, I shrugged. “Honestly, I had just watched my mother die and went to spend time with my dad right after the truck incident. It escaped my mind.” It really did. The day had been very traumatic and eventful, keeping tabs on a so-called accident, at least what I thought at the time, was something to be easily forgotten.

Abel nodded. He accepted my reasoning, which I appreciated. I wasn’t in the mood to argue over keeping more secrets from him. This one was completely unintentional, whereas Blake hitting on me and kissing me were intentional. I silently prayed, hoping he never found out about it.

“Babe, get packed and include the weapons I gave you. I’ll head to my place and pack my stuff, and I’ll come pick you up. If anybody asks, say we’re going on a little trip, and I’m surprising you with where.” I nodded, then Abel kissed me as if he wanted to tear my clothes off, and I was all for it, but he bailed on me, smirking as he got dressed.
