Julian once again directed his powerful light at the demon. Twisting the magick, he released the ancient power until the demon exploded, disintegrating to ash.

The Alpha searched the skies for Cassia, who flew down to meet him. She touched down on the ground and transformed. The Alpha ran to her and embraced her in his arms.

“It’s okay, sweetheart.” Julian released Cassia to inspect her, his heart crushed, worried she’d been injured.

“I’m okay. The cambion are all gone. The humans too. It’s over.” She fell into his arms once again.

“Wait … where’s Rafe?” Julian asked, his heart pounding in his chest. “No, no, no.”

Greyson materialized in front of him.

“Where’s Rafe?” Julian’s voice edged on panic. He couldn’t sense his beta anywhere.

“I’m sorry I missed the action, but the wolves. We managed to save a couple of them but one didn’t make it,” the vampire explained.

“Greyson!” Julian yelled. “Where is Rafe? He was just here with me.”

“Did Asmodeus take him?” Greyson tilted his head, looking at the pile of ash. “Where’s the demon?”

“Sayuri sent it back to Hell. She did the spell and I used my light to destroy it. The last time I saw Rafe he was chasing a man. A human. Shit.”

“Where is the human?” Greyson swiveled his head, scanning the area. “I don’t see any.”

“I don’t feel him. Not at all. He’s gone. I don’t think he’s here. A human couldn’t have done that to him … couldn’t have flashed him out of here. No, no … something else. If I didn’t take him and you didn’t take him, something else came for him and it wasn’t a demon.”

“Is he dead?” Tears formed in Cassia’s eyes.

“I don’t know, sweetheart. I don’t feel him here but … I don’t know what just happened.” Confusion swept through Julian. Rafe had been his responsibility and he’d lost him.

“You say he was going after a human, huh?” Greyson asked. “What did he look like.”

“I don’t know. He was a tall guy but no match for Rafe. I didn’t see a weapon.”

“If he were in trouble, it’s possible Viktor could have sensed him…flashed him out of here.”

“I need you to go find out. I’m ready to get the fuck off this mountain and back home. I want to know where my beta is, and I want to know now. If Viktor interfered and took him, I’m going to kick his ass.”

Cassia stared out the window, still recovering from the experience on the mountain. She’d finally shaken the fear of the hellhounds, the demon was destroyed. Though she had few personal belongings, she felt richer than anyone on earth. Finding her mate had been exhilarating and liberating. So long without a home, she was home as long as she was with Julian.

They’d returned to Logan’s so Julian could work with the wolves. She’d spent a few days resting, recovering from battle. It had saddened her to lose Makoto but she’d celebrated their victory and moreover the new friendships they’d forged. She and Julian had built a team … vampires, dragons and wolves. Her thoughts turned to Rafe, her mind heavy with concern.

It had been two days since they’d seen him. Through Sayuri, they’d contacted Thorn, who assured them the wolf wasn’t anywhere in Hell. Greyson was off chasing down leads in an attempt to find Viktor, who’d taken a one-month cruise on one of his many yachts. Julian found solace in knowing Viktor would have gone mad with rage had Rafe died or if he was showing any signs of distress.

“You sure you don’t want to call Greyson?” Cassia asked.

“I don’t think so. I’ve thought about this and I know he’s not dead. I’m not his maker but I’m his Alpha. I would know if he’d died or if he was in pain. I would have felt it.”

“What about Ilsbeth?” Cassia hated to ask the question, but the witch had caused so much trouble for the wolves.

“Greyson asked her. She doesn’t know anything.”

“Dominique is pretty pissed. She texted me and said she’s going to look for him.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, but Dom is Dom and she’s going to do what she wants to do. I really feel like he just needed to get away. No one who’s connected to him has lost their tie to him … it’s a connection … like ours. I know he’s alive.”

“If we don’t hear back by tomorrow night, maybe we should go find Greyson and help him look for Rafe,” Cassia suggested.
