“Eileen Farraday.”

Yep. She was definitely going to need to have a little chat with Paxton Farraday.

Chapter Fifteen

One of the perks of running your own company and not being part of the construction crew but the landscape team, meant Paxton could leave the job site any time he wanted. In this case, he wanted to leave in time to surprise Sandra Lynn after her first day of work.

Leaned against the wall between the Cut n’ Curl and the new craft store, he glanced at his watch. She should be done any moment. He’d gotten a text from his cousin Grace that even though Sandra didn’t say anything, every time a Farraday walked in the door with a last-minute nail appointment, she gave them a funny look. A look that got more intense with each arrival.

Quickly realizing his mistake, he reached out to Adam and had him send his younger vet tech over on his dime as an employee perk. Thankfully, all the Farradays had a soft spot for Sandra Lynn, because of her situation they were even more interested in helping out. Somehow, the tech had been delighted to participate and maneuvered Adam into both a manicure and pedicure. Tomorrow, he’d talk to Brooks. There had to be a slew of ladies at his clinic who he could give an employee manicure for a bonus. Though, now that he thought about it, Aunt Eileen was most likely already working on setting up every female in town to go support Sandra Lynn. He’d have to talk to her tonight before he did anything else.

The front door squeaked open and Sandra’s voice floated onto the street. “Thanks again, Polly. See you tomorrow.”

“It was a great day, Sandra Lynn,” Polly answered, a contented lilt to her voice.

“So it went well?” Paxton eased away from the wall.

Sandra gasped and jumped back a foot. “Didn’t anyone ever tell you not to sneak up on someone?”

“I wasn’t sneaking.” He gave her his best aren’t I irresistible smile.

“Close enough.” She shook her head at him, and was not smiling back. “You scared the dickens out of me.”

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to. I was just anxious to find out how your day went and see if I could talk you into telling me all about it over dinner?”

Still standing in front of the salon doorway, her foot barely tapping, she speared him with a studious glare. “On one condition.”

He bobbed his head.

“You agree to tell me the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

Uh-oh. Did he have a choice? “Agreed.”

The smile he so had gotten used to and loved seeing, took over her face. “Walk with me. Mom’s birthday is this weekend and I made enough in tips today to do a little shopping at Sisters.”

“Really?” He hoped his expression displayed innocence and not triumph.

“You know darn well I had a busy day.”

“I do?”

Her steps slowed, and she turned her head to face him. “Truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”

He blew out a sigh. “Okay, maybe I had an idea you might be a bit busy.”

“Might?”

“There are a lot of people in this town.”

“And all of them suddenly needed a manicure this afternoon?” She was still smiling so any irritation she might have initially held at his interference was hopefully gone.

“Did they?”

Again, she stopped in her tracks, and hands on her hips, twisted to face him. Her silence yelled at him louder than any words.

“Okay. I guess they did.”

Her smile back again, she leaned in and kissed his cheek. “Thank you.”
