Page 73 of Enduring Darkness

Standing there by the wall, I stare at the scene before me while my heart pounds erratically in my chest and my core pulses with forbidden emotions. I’m still drunk. Ridiculously drunk. That has to be the reason for my body’s strange reaction to this unnecessarily hot power play that Kaden is orchestrating.

“Please,” Eric sobs.

Ruthless power laces Kaden’s tone as he orders, “Say it.”

“If I ever put my hands on Alina again, you will cut off my fingers one by one and feed them to me,” Eric finally manages to press out.

“Good. Now, apologize.”

He looks up at Kaden with pleading blue eyes. “I’m sorry. I’m—”

Another scream rips through the air as Kaden twists his wrist harder again.

“To her, you fucking moron,” Kaden snaps.

Tears of pain trickle down Eric’s cheeks, which are now red from embarrassment or agony or both, and he sniffles before shifting his gaze to me. “I’m sorry, Alina.”

“Surely you can do better than that,” Kaden says as he begins twisting again.

“No,” I blurt out, speaking for the first time since my own personal psycho and unexpected savior showed up. “It’s fine. I accept the apology.”

“It was barely an apology.” Fury burns like cold flames in his eyes as he looks down at Eric before shifting his attention back to me. “He should be fucking groveling for your forgiveness for daring to—”

“Kaden.” I hold his gaze with pleading eyes. “Please.”

If he actually hurts Eric in any permanent way, it’s my family who will suffer the wrath of the Wilsons. And I don’t want that.

Kaden looks down at his victim again, as if considering whether or not to twist that final bit and break his wrist anyway. But then he simply clicks his tongue and releases him instead.

While I’m busy reeling from the shock that Kaden actually did as I asked, Eric scrambles to his feet and quickly backs away several steps. He’s cradling his right hand against his chest, but it doesn’t appear broken.

Suspicion swirls in his blue eyes as he looks from me, to Kaden’s face, down to Kaden’s black combat boots, up to the knife that he is nonchalantly twirling in his hand now, and then back to his face again.

“You’re Kaden Hunter,” Eric says at last. He sounds surprised by the realization.

A true psychopath smile curls Kaden’s lips in response.

It makes Eric flinch and edge another step back. Then his gaze darts to me, and his tone turns accusatory instead. “You’re forming an alliance with the Hunters instead?”

Before I can protest that I’m not engaged to Kaden, that lethal psycho slips out two throwing knives and unceremoniously raises his hand to hurl them at Eric’s head.

Panic pulses across Eric’s narrow face, and he stumbles backwards before whirling around and outright sprinting away.

Next to me, Kaden lets out a mocking chuckle.

After returning both the throwing knives and his other blade to their holsters, he turns around to face me.

My stomach lurches at the look he gives me.

Turning around, I fix Alina with a penetrating stare. “What the hell was that about?”

She blinks at me. Then she lifts one shoulder in a nonchalant shrug and starts forward as if to walk away. “Nothing.”

I grab her by the arm, forcing her to stop and turn back to face me. “Answer me.”
