Fuck, what was he doing?

Leilani drew in a breath, panting. Her eyes were wide with question.

“You should have run,” Jacob said, palming the side of her face.

“I know,” she replied, glancing away.

Her reaction and those two little words stabbed him in the chest. Leilani had no romantic notions about the two of them being together. She knew who he was and what he could offer.

Dark wild sex with multiple lovers.

That was all.

“Why did you come with me tonight?” he asked, sliding his hands down her body to hold her hips.

She shrugged. “I don’t know. We were both unhappy, and I guess I wanted to see you again after Friday night.”

“Do you regret it?” Jacob asked.

“No.”

“Would you do it again?” he asked, knowing the answer but needing to hear it.

“No. But not for the reasons you think,” she said.

God, what was it about this woman?

He hated that she saw him as this bad, wild man. A character of himself he’d created to protect himself from rejection.

He wanted to kiss her again.

Wanted to show her who he really was.

That he could love, that he could be nice, and maybe, just maybe, someone like her could love him for that.

You should have run.

I know.

She had already decided about him. He was exciting and forbidden. Someone she would tell her husband about one day and they’d laugh.

Unless he bared his soul and asked the one question on the tip of his lips. A question that would change both their lives, because if she said yes, he wasn’t sure he would ever let her go.

Come home with me.

He ground his teeth, forcing the words back.

“Time’s up folks,” the man from the front desk called out.

Saved by the bell.
