I cut him off. “When he started to put his hand up her leg, I’d seen enough. I burst out of the closet, popped his bodyguard, and then popped him.”

“Backstabbing scu—”

“Mister Rigiano. The bird I saved… was your daughter.”

His eyes widen, and he punches the table so hard the whole place turns to us.

“The fuck did you just say to me?” He rises like he’s going to fight me.

Out of respect, I stand and take a step back, still calm. If I wanted, I could take whatever weapon he’s about to pull and stick it in his neck, but I would never.

“Get out of my sight, kid! Get the fuck out!” He points, and I put my hands up innocently and back away.

The next few days go well. Despite Ronny Shadow’s anger, things quiet in the war. My guess is he’s been demanding information from his connections… and some of what I say checks out.

I finally make a deal with a Chinese buyer to sell my pristine safe house. Three hundred thousand on paper goes to my father’s estate – which I want nothing to do with – and I take two million under-the-table. I tell him we’ll list the property ‘as-is’ and pretend it’s in shambles. Old mobster trick to sell something under market without raising eyebrows.

Sal came out of hiding, fucking pussy. And Scar reports back with good earnings this week. Yet, despite all that, I can’t keep Ellie happy. She’s not in the mood for nookie, dinners are sad and distant, and I don’t have good news to report on my efforts with her father. But I won’t give up.

I’m worried about her.

I try everything. Champagne, flowers, big stuffed teddy bears, even a brand new safe house that’s bigger than the last one. Nothing cheers her up.

I kiss her forehead and leave her with Sabrina to start decorating the new place.

There’s one thing I haven’t been able to do to bring her back. Time to pull out the stops.

The drive to Iconn Prison leaves my mind to wander. This meeting can’t be contentious. I have to keep it cordial at all costs. The threads between our families have to be woven if Ellie’s ever going to perk up again. I can’t fail her after what she’s done for me.

I go through the process of getting into the family visiting section again and sit down on the grey bench while I await Don Shadow. The place is packed like last time, and after a few minutes of looking around, I wonder if he’s not going to show.

I hit a nerve… Enough time has to have passed for him to digest the truth.

Another ten minutes go by, and I curse under my breath.

He isn’t coming.

I wait despite the thousand things needing to be caught up on. Ellie is more important. I miss her smile, and her pussy.

I knock my knuckles on the table and twitch my leg.

Fuck.

Another minute goes by, and the door creaks open. Chains rattle behind the security guard, and I sense Ronny’s swagger behind him.

I lock eyes with him as he makes his way over. He calmly situates himself on the bench and nods at me.

“Alright, kid,” he says. “Took some broken bones inside my own family, but I got there. Your story checks out.”

I want to sigh with relief, but I hold it in and nod back to the Don.

“I want peace between our families, Mister Rigiano. Mine is on the rise, and yours is in shambles, but that could flip at any second, as is the way in our world. So, while I technically have the upper hand, I’m extending an olive branch. Why don’t we make amends so we can all eat without blowing each other’s brains out?”

Ronny clicks his tongue. “I’m stuck in here, kid. What do you want me to do?”

I tilt my head to eye him. “Funny, because I heard two hits got called off on my main guys.”
